How many times have we found ourselves in a situation—a comment, or even a gesture or attitude—that acts as a trigger, causing us to lose our composure and react in the worst possible way?
In those moments, we’re left exposed; we reveal that we’re not as level-headed as we seem and that our self-control is limited.
Because the worst part is the feeling that sets in after it’s all over, when we’re at home in the throes of reliving that scene, with all the “I shouldn’t have said that, I should have said this instead” or simply “I shouldn’t have acted that way—it wasn’t worth it.”
It happens to me fairly often.

That’s why it’s important to give ourselves a moment before reacting—a pause between the stimulus and the response—so we don’t blurt out words without thinking.
It’s something I’ve been practicing, and it often works for me; however, when I’m in the midst of an injustice—not against me, but against others—I find it very difficult not to say anything. It unnerves me, because it almost always happens when there’s a power imbalance.
Even so, I must learn; I must keep trying.

When something upsets me, my body reacts without thinking: My heart races, my jaw tenses, and I feel a very strong urge to respond immediately.
I’ve read that the simplest way to avoid an unnecessary confrontation is to count to 10 in your head while trying to breathe slowly.
Breathing and trying to return to our center before acting is a simple trick that aims to take control away from emotion and give it back to reason.
In my head, I repeat to myself: It’s not worth it, it’s not worth it, it’s not worth it—and sometimes I even just walk away from the conflict.

Qué inteligente ¿no?
I remember once, not long after I’d started at the company where I work, I received an email that really upset me. I wanted to respond in no uncertain terms—I mean, to tear the person who wrote it apart with my words.
Fortunately, I first told my boss what I was planning to do, and he said the following:
“Don’t write that email today. Wait until tomorrow, and if you still think it’s necessary to respond that way, go ahead. Just think about whether it’s really worth it.”
How smart, right?
Of course, by the next day I wasn’t upset anymore and didn’t even care about that email, so I didn’t reply.

And to get everything out of our hearts, the best thing I’ve found is to write it down in a notebook, without holding back. Not to show it to anyone, just to let off steam.
Then I talk to God, and my feelings are no longer anger but gratitude, and I also feel a little ashamed of my attitude. God knows my heart; before Him, I can’t and don’t want to appear perfect.
When I look back, those events that affected me so much at the time seem so insignificant… I try to keep that in mind, too.
