Hi Hive,
Hunting for an apartment to rent sounds exciting until reality humbles you. I used to think all that mattered was seeing a beautiful room, tiled floors, POP ceiling and maybe a clean compound. But after experiencing stress from a poorly chosen apartment, I realized there are so many important things people actually ignore when house hunting.

Environment is one thing I always look out for now. A beautiful apartment inside means nothing if the area is so noisy, unsafe, or floods whenever rain falls. There was a time I almost rented a place because the rent was cheap and the rooms looked attractive too. But thankfully, I visited again in the evening and discovered the neighborhood turned into a completely different place at night, loud arguments, bad roads, and poor lighting everywhere. And that experience taught me never to rush.
Another thing I pay close attention to is water and electricity. In Nigeria especially, these two i mentioned earlier can determine whether you enjoy your stay or suffer daily frustration. Because some landlords promise “constant light” until you move in and discover tenants barely sleep because they spend nights pumping water or searching for fuel for generators. Now, before making any payment, I ask questions and even speak with neighbors or existing tenants privately to confirm the situation.
Another major factor people overlook is security. It is not enough for a compound to have a gate. I check if the area is secure, if looked into cases of theft around, and if people return home safely at night. Because peace of mind is priceless.
And I also learned to inspect the apartment carefully instead of being carried away by appearance only. Things like leaking roofs, bad plumbing, weak doors, poor ventilation, or cracked walls may seem small at first but can become expensive headaches later. Some agents will even try to pressure you by saying, “Another person is interested already,” but I have learned not to let desperation control my decisions especially during house hunting and I'm talking from experience.
And lastly, I look at the landlord and neighbors. Honestly, difficult neighbors or an unreasonable landlord can make life tough or uncomfortable no matter how nice the apartment looks. The energy around a place really matters.
At the end, I believe renting an apartment is more than finding shelter, but it is choosing the kind of peace or stress you want to live with every day. A good apartment should not only look good in pictures but it should feel safe, comfortable, and practical for real life as well.
