I haven't read your posts in a while, and this one popped on my radar tonight.
I have to say that your writing flows beautifully the arguments are absolutely correct.

What you're describing in India sounds a lot like the US in the 80's-90's - That corporate ladder race. Where having an office with a window is the height of status.

The first thing that people don't seem to understand is that a job is a lot more exploitative than business ownership or work at a shop. Westerners understand this - they value self actualization above corporate status.

Education isn't even a requirement on a resume anymore.

Family upbringing is also a factor. Do parents in India tell their kids to "go after their dreams" or do they say "One day you will be a fine Doctor." ?

anyway there are many more aspects to this... but one thing that I think is worth noting... most people don't change their ego from being asked to appreciate "work" what might change them is demonstration how a job hurts their ego through exploitation, and that it's an outdated dream to chase.

It seems like I made some waves and this title was catchy enough to get your attention! That is very kind of you to say about my writing flow and the arguments I presented.

I am actually from Pakistan, but it is okay because the situation is very similar across several nations in this region. Your comment's context remains completely accurate regardless of the location. You mentioned that a job is more exploitative than business ownership, but the reality is that owning a business is hard and risky. Many people prefer to stay in "easy mode" even if it is slowly leading them toward their doomsday.

While Westerners might understand the value of self actualization, Pakistan is still quite far from reaching that understanding. It is truly funny how degrees remain so overrated even when the global market is changing.

Regarding family upbringing, my father actually wished for me to become a Commissioned Officer, which is a noble military rank. You can find more about my response to that in my post titled Golden Prison. What I did not mention there is that every time he tries to convince me to join the military, since he is a military man himself, I always tell him that I cannot simply say "Yes, sir" to anyone. I would be far happier as a scrap collector, a profession often considered disrespectful, because I would earn less but have my freedom.

I'm sorry I confused your home-courtly... I was looking at the comments and due to the India-United account assumed that it was related to your location. But, as you said, there is a lot of cultural and economic overlap between the two.

Also interesting that you brought up you Dad wanting you to have a military career. My parents did the opposite - they left the country before the possibility of me getting drafted. And I'm grateful for that - I am also very anti-authoritarian by nature, and will not do anything that conflicts with my moral compass, or diminishes my agency.

I'm glad that this post generated the engagement it deserves, because most of us can relate to the rat-race, fulfilling expectations, and chasing status. "Breaking the Idol of Ego" can apply to so many flawed ego-driven behaviors we have. Its very universal.
