The Disconnect Between Degrees and Practical Skills
The fresh university graduate entered the room. In his hand was a bundle of degrees and on his face was a confidence that was clearly reflected in his gait. A three-member interview panel sat in front of him. The young man had passed the test; now it was the turn of the interview, for which he had come fully prepared. Instead of asking a formal question, one of the gentlemen in the panel gave him a plain sheet of paper and said: "Why should we give you this job? Write the answer to this question on this page in the form of a two-line email."
Believe me, dear readers, after half an hour that young man returned with a worried face, and some clumsy, excuse-like, disorganized sentences were written on that plain paper. When the panel looked at him in disbelief, he started saying: "Sir! I tried, but I do not know how to set the email format." The interviewer said: "But the marks in your degree are very good." He gave a very strange answer: "Sir! We used to read books, we did nothing practical." Hearing this, one gentleman asked in surprise: "Young man! Still, writing a text is not such a difficult task." Now he answered in a somewhat bitter tone: "Sir! We have learned to read books and give exams, we have not exactly learned to do essay writing like children."
The Crisis of Grades Versus Competence
Dear readers! I fell into thought after hearing this sentence. Do our universities really only give "grades" and not teach skills? What is the reason that a "capable scholar" here does not even know how to write his claim. Was he devoid of the ability to express what was in his mind, or was he unable to mold it into the frame of a few words? In these circumstances, the claim seems correct that more than four hundred and fifty thousand graduates enter the market in Pakistan every year, but only 20 percent of them have the skills required for employment. Have you ever thought that this is the tragedy which is the biggest obstacle in the path of our national progress?
An HR manager of a large company was asked: "What is the biggest challenge you face regarding employees?" Answering this question in one word, he said: "Skill!" Upon further inquiry, he started saying: "We get degrees, but we do not find skills; even such MBA holders reach us who do not know accounting, such computer science graduates are found who do not know coding, and they too are scholars and graduates." What kind of tragedy is this, friends? Have we limited education just to a 'degree'? Have we started to think that obtaining degrees is success? If this thinking is arising in our youth, then it is a matter of great concern, because it is an established fact that real and true success lies only in acquiring skills. And a degree is only its information and testimony and nothing more!
Redefining Success Through Practical Artistry
It is exactly as if a task is assigned to you and it is said that when the work is completed, call me and inform me. If you do not do that work at all and start shouting loudly, then obviously the world will laugh at you that, sir, this sound and noise was not an object in itself, it was a means of information after the completion of work, which you considered as the original; that is, you forgot the purpose and went after the means of achieving that purpose. I believe that our degrees without art and skill are examples of the same. But the question arises as to why we are obsessed with this jinni of the degree?
I feel that the reason for this is our social pressure. We think that a degree raises our social status. And this concept has become so firm in our land that after this we do not even think that real respect comes from skillfulness. The reality is that in today's era, the market does not buy the degree, it buys the skill. A good electrician can earn more per month than a quack doctor. A skilled plumber earns more than a makeshift engineer. A good web developer can earn more than a professor. Do you know that the demand for skilled laborers from Pakistan abroad is increasing every year? But we are making our children run after the degree.
A Roadmap for a Skilled Future
So friends! Can we get out of this deception of the degree? Can we understand the importance of skill? I think yes! And today I am going to claim that I have the roadmap for it. Yes! Because I know very well that there is that capability within our nation by which they can throw nooses at the stars. It just needs to be given a proper and correct direction, therefore I say that in this regard we will first have to do a few basic things; for example, we should learn some skill along with the degree, which if it is according to your relevant field i.e. your degree then it is a golden addition, and even if it cannot be so, then definitely learn some art or the other.
Secondly, we should mold ourselves according to the requirements of the market. Make people realize and sense their need. Also, along with this, give priority to practical and functional knowledge over theoretical knowledge; not only walk on this path yourself but run an awareness campaign that works in this direction. And along with this, we should also learn small skills whose duration is short, which are relatively easy; we should not consider them small but consider them an opportunity for ourselves and work on them. So dear readers! Let's decide together today that we will give importance to skill along with the degree. And we will not let this matter remain limited to our own selves, but will make our children and our generations skilled because we have known that a degree is merely a piece of paper which fades with time, but skill is that pearl which keeps shining in every era. A man sitting on the footpath holding a degree in his hand is poorer than that skilled laborer who is standing on the roof of the house built by himself and is looking for new fields of action.
ڈگریوں اور عملی مہارتوں کے درمیان فرق
یونیورسٹی کا وہ تازہ گریجویٹ کمرے میں داخل ہوا۔ اس کے ہاتھ میں ڈگریوں کا پلندہ اور چہرے پر اعتماد تھا، جو اس کی چال ڈھال سے بھی خوب جھلک رہا تھا۔ سامنے سہ رکنی انٹرویو پینل بیٹھا تھا۔ وہ نوجوان ٹیسٹ پاس کر چکا تھا، اب انٹرویو کی باری تھی، جس کی وہ بھرپور تیاری کر کے آیا تھا۔ پینل میں سے ایک صاحب نے کوئی رسمی سوال پوچھنے کے بجائے اسے ایک سادہ صفحہ دیا اور کہا: "ہم یہ جاب تمہیں ہی کیوں دیں۔۔؟ اس سوال کا جواب دو سطری ای میل کی صورت میں اس صفحے پر لکھ کر دو"۔
قارئین کرام! یقین مانیے آدھے گھنٹے بعد وہ نوجوان پریشان سا چہرہ لیے واپس آیا اور اس سادھے صفحے پر کچھ بے ڈھنگے سے اعذار نما، بے ترتیب جملے لکھے ہوئے تھے۔ پینل نے بے یقینی سے اس کی طرف دیکھا، تو وہ کہنے لگا: "سر! میں نے کوشش کی مگر مجھے ای میل کا فارمیٹ سیٹ کرنا نہیں آتا۔" انٹرویو والے نے کہا: "مگر تمہاری ڈگری میں مارکس تو بہت اچھے ہیں۔" اس نے بڑا عجیب جواب دیا: "سر! ہم کتابیں پڑھتے تھے، پریکٹیکل کچھ نہیں کیا۔" یہ سن کر ایک صاحب نے حیران ہو کر پوچھا: "صاحبزادے! پھر بھی تحریر لکھنا کوئی اتنا مشکل کام بھی نہیں"۔ اب اس نے ذرا کرواہٹ بڑے لہجے میں جواب دیا: "سر! ہم نے کتابیں پڑھنا اور امتحان دینا سیکھا ہے، بچوں کی طرح مضمون نویسی کرنا تھوڑا ہی سیکھا ہے۔"
گریڈز بمقابلہ قابلیت کا بحران
قارئین کرام! یہ جملہ سن کر میں سوچ میں پڑ گیا۔ کیا واقعی ہماری یونیورسٹیاں " صرف گریڈ" دیتی ہیں ہنر نہیں سکھاتیں۔۔۔؟ کیا وجہ ہے کہ یہاں کے ایک " قابل فاضل" کو اپنا مدعیٰ تک نہیں لکھنا آرہا۔ وہ اظہار مافی الضمیر کی صلاحیت سے کورا تھا یا اسے چند لفظوں کے قالب میں نہیں ڈھال پا رہا تھا۔ ان حالات میں تو پھر یہ دعویٰ ٹھیک لگتا ہے کہ پاکستان میں ہر سال ساڑھے چار لاکھ سے زیادہ گریجویٹ مارکیٹ میں آتے ہیں مگر ان میں سے صرف 20 فیصد کے پاس ملازمت کے لیے درکار ہنر ہوتے ہیں۔ کیا آپ نے کبھی سوچا کہ یہی وہ المیہ ہے، جو ہماری قومی ترقی کی راہ میں سب سے بڑی رکاوٹ ہے۔
ایک بڑی کمپنی کے ایچ ار مینیجر سے پوچھا گیا: "آپ کو ملازمین کے حوالے سے سب سے بڑا چیلنج کیا پیش آتا ہے۔۔؟" انہوں نے اس سوال کا ایک لفظ میں جواب دیتے ہوئے کہا: "ہنر!" مزید استفسار پر کہنے لگے: "ہمیں ڈگریاں تو مل جاتی ہیں، مگر ہنر نہیں ملتے، ہمارے پاس ایسے ایم بی اے ہولڈر بھی پہنچ جاتے ہیں، جنہیں اکاؤنٹنگ نہیں آتی، ایسے کمپیوٹر سائنس گریجویٹس ملتے ہیں، جنہیں کوڈنگ نہیں آتی اور ہوتے وہ بھی فاضل اور گریجویٹس ہی ہیں۔" یہ کیسا المیہ ہے دوستو۔۔؟ کیا ہم نے تعلیم کو بس 'ڈگری' تک محدود کر دیا ہے۔۔؟ کیا ہم یہ سمجھنے لگے ہیں کہ ڈگریاں حاصل کر لینا ہی کامیابی ہے۔۔۔؟ اگر یہ سوچ ہمارے نوجوانوں میں پیدا ہو رہی ہے، تو بڑی تشویش کی بات ہے، کیونکہ یہ ایک مسلمہ حقیقت ہے کہ حقیقی اور سچی کامیابی تو ہنر حاصل کرنے میں ہی ہے۔ اور ڈگری صرف اس کی اطلاع و گواہی اور بس!
عملی فن کے ذریعے کامیابی کی نئی تعریف
بالکل ایسے ہی جیسے آپ کے ذمے کوئی کام لگایا جائے اور کہا جائے کہ جب کام مکمل ہو جائے تو مجھے آواز دینا اور اطلاع کرنا۔ آپ وہ کام تو بالکل نہ کریں اور آوازیں زور و شور سے لگانا شروع کر دیں، تو ظاہر ہے دنیا آپ پر ہنسے گی کہ میاں یہ آواز اور شور بذات خود کوئی مقصود نہیں تھا، یہ تو کام مکمل ہونے کے بعد اطلاع کا ذریعہ تھا، جسے آپ نے اصل ہی سمجھ لیا، یعنی مقصد بھلا بیٹھے اور اس مقصد کو حاصل کرنے کے ذریعے کے پیچھے پڑ گئے۔ میں یہ سمجھتا ہوں کہ بغیر فن اور ہنر کے ہماری ڈگریوں کی مثال بھی ایسی ہی ہے۔ مگر سوال یہ پیدا ہوتا ہے کہ آخر ہم ڈگری کے اس جنون میں کیوں مبتلا ہیں۔۔؟
مجھے ایسا لگتا ہے کہ اس کی وجہ ہمارا سماجی دباؤ ہے۔ ہم سمجھتے ہیں کہ ڈگری ہماری سماجی حیثیت کو بلند کرتی ہے۔ اور یہ تصور ہمارے دیار میں اتنا پختہ ہو چکا ہے کہ اس کے بعد ہم یہ سوچتے تک نہیں کہ حقیقی عزت تو ہنرمندی سے آتی ہے۔ حقیقت تو یہ ہے کہ آج کے دور میں مارکیٹ ڈگری کو نہیں، ہنر کو خریدتی ہے۔ ایک اچھا الیکٹریشن ماہانہ ایک عطائی ڈاکٹر سے زیادہ کما سکتا ہے۔ ایک ہنرمند پلمبر، ایک جگاڑی انجینیئر سے زیادہ کماتا ہے۔ ایک اچھا ویب ڈیویلپر، ایک پروفیسر سے زیادہ کما سکتا ہے۔ کیا آپ جانتے ہیں کہ پاکستان میں ہنر مند مزدوروں کی بیرون ملک مانگ ہر سال بڑھ رہی ہے۔ مگر ہم اپنے بچوں کو ڈگری کے پیچھے بھگا رہے ہیں۔
ہنر مند مستقبل کے لیے ایک روڈ میپ
تو دوستو! کیا ہم اس ڈگری کے دھوکے سے نکل سکتے ہیں۔۔؟ کیا ہم ہنر کی اہمیت کو سمجھ سکتے ہیں۔۔؟ میرا خیال ہے ہاں! اور آج میں یہ دعویٰ کرنے لگا ہوں کہ میرے پاس اس کا روڈ میپ ہے۔ جی ہاں! کیونکہ میں بخوبی جانتا ہوں کہ ہماری قوم کے اندر وہ صلاحیت ہے، جس سے یہ ستاروں پر کمندیں ڈال سکتے ہیں۔ بس اسے مناسب اور صحیح رخ دینے کی ضرورت ہے، لہٰذا میں یہ کہتا ہوں کہ ہمیں اس سلسلے میں سب سے پہلے چند بنیادی کام کرنے ہوں گے مثلاً ہم ڈگری کے ساتھ ساتھ کوئی ہنر بھی سیکھیں، جو اگر آپ کے متعلقہ فیلڈ یعنی آپ کی ڈگری کے مطابق ہو تو سونے پہ سہاگا اور اگر ایسا نہ بھی ہو سکے تو بھی کوئی نہ کوئی فن ضرور سیکھیں۔
دوسرا یہ کہ ہم مارکیٹ کی ضروریات کے مطابق اپنے آپ کو ڈھالیں۔ لوگوں کو ان کی ضرورت کا ادراک و احساس کرائیں۔ نیز اسی کے ساتھ عملی اور پریکٹیکل علم کو تھیوریکل علم پر ترجیح دیں نہ صرف خود اس راہ پر چلیں بلکہ ایک آگاہی مہم چلائیں، جو اس سمت کام کریں۔ اور اسی کے ساتھ ہم چھوٹے ہنر بھی سیکھیں، جن کا دورانیہ مختصر ہو، جو نسبتاً آسان ہوں، ہم انہیں چھوٹا نہ سمجھیں بلکہ انہیں اپنے لیے موقع سمجھیں اور ان پر کام کریں۔ تو قارئین کرام! آئیے آج مل کر فیصلہ کریں کہ ہم ڈگری کے ساتھ ساتھ ہنر کو اہمیت دیں گے۔ اور یہ بات ہم اپنی ذات تک محدود نہیں رہنے دیں گے، بلکہ اپنے بچوں اور اپنے نسلوں تک کو ہنر مند بنائیں گے کیونکہ ہم یہ جان چکے ہیں کہ ڈگری تو محض کاغذ کا ایک ٹکڑا ہے، جو وقت کے ساتھ پھیکا پڑ جاتا ہے مگر ہنر وہ موتی ہیں، جو ہر دور میں چمکتا رہتا ہے۔ ڈگری ہاتھ میں پکڑے فٹ پاتھ پر بیٹھا آدمی اس ہنر مند مزدور سے زیادہ غریب ہے، جو اپنے ہی تعمیر کردہ مکان کی چھت پر کھڑا ہو، اور نئے میدان عمل تلاش رہا ہو۔
