I have had similar experience to yours when it comes to breaking promises I made. Which is one of the reasons why I don't really promise people or else I already have whatever I'm promising at hand. The fact is life is unpredictable, a person will sincerely want to help but they find themselves in a situation beyond their control and the person being promised would never truly understand. Life is strange.
