I resorted to my passport so as not to miss the date, as stated on one of the few pages used I started my last trip one day after my 37th birthday.
For the first time I was able to go on vacation outside my country, and I was clear about the destination, I wanted to get to know the famous Uyuni Salt Flat, and also the mythical Lake Titicaca, a meeting place of Gods and men.
The days before the trip, in my few free hours, I spent researching other places in Bolivia that would be interesting to know, such as the famous Death Highway, the La Paz cable cars, and even archaeological sites whose names I have already forgotten.
My list was long, I had 15 working days and so many sites of interest to know that the roadmap was quite tight.
I had two options to get to Bolivia, the first was to take a bus from Asunción to Santa Cruz. This was the cheapest option, but for tourist purposes a little boring and uncomfortable, since I had to cross the entire Paraguayan Chaco, and the Bolivian one in the middle of summer in a Bus without air conditioning, in which they usually travel even chickens. Well, those were the references I had been given.
The second option was much more attractive, since from Asunción we would travel through the Northeast of Argentina, arriving at the border in La Quiaca. Crossing the border on foot we arrive at Villazón, from where a train departs to Uyuni.
The train ride was the part that interested me the most, since the first and only time I was able to travel by train was when I was about 11 years old, and the route was just under 20 kilometers.
Predicting almost the future, I had decided to book a Capsule Hotel inside the Uyuni train station itself, which was a success, since halfway there was a blockade that delayed the arrival several hours. We arrived at our destination at about 3 in the morning, and luckily I just had to climb the stairs and do my check-in.
The first day in Uyuni, I missed the departure of the vans that made the excursions to the Salar de Uyuni for 3 or 4 days, and I had to settle for a walk through the small but beautiful city of Uyuni.
The next day I got a place on one of the 3-day tours, which covered several tourist areas, in addition to the main attraction which is the Salt Flat.
We visited the Salt Hotels, where they are literally built with salt blocks, the Valley of the Moon, the Verde and Colorada Lagoons, and some small hot springs surrounded by ice or snow, where I could have stayed a whole day.
The Salar de Uyuni, I must say, is one of the most spectacular places I had to visit, I had chosen the month of February, to be able to observe the mirror effect, which is caused by the accumulation of rainwater on the salt, which makes the reflection is of such clarity that the sky seems to merge with the earth.
Then, my next stop was Oruro, to take a bus to Lake Titicaca. I must admit that the Carnival of Oruro was never on my roadmap, since crowds of people are not my thing, but I was lucky enough to witness part of the Indigenous Carnival, which takes place during the day, in which members of each of the original communities of the Plurinational State of Bolivia participate.
I think this event is more worthy of dissemination than the Oruro Carnival itself, because it is more genuine and in it a sense of belonging and pride of each community is appreciated, wearing with gallantry and self-love their typical regional costumes.
My next and last destination turned out to be Copacabana, but the one in Bolivia, which on the shores of the majestic Lake Titicaca, projects so much peace and tranquility, that I couldn't resist spending the rest of my days there. I sailed through the Titicaca to visit the Isla del Sol enjoying the waters so blue that they looked like those of the sea, I visited the famous Floating Islands, built with totora, a material with incredible resistance, I strolled through the traditional markets with their thousand and one colors of corn and tasted a Bolivian ceviche in an outdoor dining room.
In short, Bolivia is a country that has a lot to offer tourists, of course, do not expect hospitality from the locals, but despite that, I would return, maybe with more time and with companions, to enjoy all those stops that I skipped from my planned itinerary.*
Recurrí a mi pasaporte para no fallar la fecha, según consta en una de las pocas páginas utilizadas inicié mi último viaje un día después de mi cumpleaños número 37.
Por primera vez pude salir de vacaciones fuera de mi país, y tenía claro el destino, quería conocer el famoso Salar de Uyuni, y también el mítico Lago Titicaca, lugar de encuentro de Dioses y hombres.
Los días previos al viaje, en mis pocas horas libres, me dedicaba a investigar otros lugares de Bolivia que sería interesante conocer, como la famosa Carretera de la Muerte, los teleféricos de La Paz, y hasta sitios arqueológicos cuyos nombres ya he olvidado.
Mi lista era larga, tenía 15 días hábiles y tantos sitios de interés por conocer que la hoja de ruta era bastante apretada.
Tenía dos opciones para llegar a Bolivia, la primera era tomando un Bus desde Asunción hasta Santa Cruz. Esta era la opción más económica, pero para fines turísticos un poco aburrido e incómodo, ya que debía cruzar todo el Chaco Paraguayo, y el Boliviano en pleno verano en un Bus sin aire acondicionado, en el que suelen viajar hasta gallinas. Bueno, esas eran las referencias que me habían dado.
La segunda opción era mucho más atractiva, ya que de Asunción viajaría por el Nordeste Argentino, llegando hasta la frontera en La Quiaca. Cruzando a pie la frontera llegamos a Villazón, desde donde parte un tren a Uyuni.
El viaje en tren era la parte que más me interesaba, ya que la primera y única vez que pude viajar en tren fue cuando tenía unos 11 años, y el recorrido era de poco menos de 20 kilómetros.
Prediciendo casi el futuro, me había decidido por reservar un Hotel Cápsula dentro de la propia estación de trenes de Uyuni, lo cual fue un acierto, ya que a mitad de camino hubo un bloqueo que retrasó la llegada varias horas. Llegamos a destino como a las 3 de la madrugada, y por suerte yo sólo debía subir las escaleras y hacer mi check-in.
El primer día en Uyuni, me perdí la salida de las camionetas que hacían las excursiones al Salar de Uyuni por 3 o 4 días, y me tuve que conformar con un paseo por la pequeña pero Bonita ciudad de Uyuni.
Al día siguiente conseguí un lugar en uno de los tours de 3 días, que abarcaba varias zonas turísticas, además de la atracción principal que es el Salar.
Visitamos los Hoteles de Sal, donde literalmente están construidos con bloques de sal, el Valle de la Luna, las Lagunas Verde y Colorada, y unas pequeñas aguas termales rodeadas de hielo o nieve, en las que me podría haber quedado un día entero.
El Salar de Uyuni, debo decir, es uno de los sitios más espectaculares que me tocó conocer, había elegido el mes de febrero, para poder observar el efecto espejo, que es ocasionado por la acumulación de agua de lluvia sobre la sal, lo que hace que el reflejo sea de una claridad tal que el cielo parece fundirse con la tierra.
Luego, mi siguiente parada fue Oruro, para tomar un bus hasta el Lago Titicaca. Debo reconocer que el Carnaval de Oruro nunca estuvo en mi hoja de ruta, ya que las aglomeraciones de gente no son lo mío, pero tuve la suerte de presenciar parte del Carnaval Indígena, que se realiza de día, en el cual participan miembros de cada una de las comunidades originarias del Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia.
Creo que este evento es más digno de difusión que el propio Carnaval de Oruro, porque es más genuino y en el se aprecia un sentido de pertenencia y orgullo de cada comunidad, luciendo con gallardía y amor propio sus trajes típicos regionales.
Mi siguiente y último destino resultó ser Copacabana, pero la de Bolivia, que a orillas del majestuoso Lago Titicaca, proyecta tanta paz y tranquilidad, que no pude resistirme a pasar el resto de mis días allí. Navegué por el Titicaca para visitar la Isla del Sol disfrutando de unas aguas tan azules que parecían las del mar, visité las famosas Islas Flotantes, construidas con totora, un material con increíble resistencia, paseé por los mercados tradicionales con sus mil y un colores de maíz y degusté un ceviche boliviano en un comedor al aire libre.
En definitiva, Bolivia es un país que tiene mucho para ofrecer al turista, eso sí, no esperen hospitalidad de los lugareños, pero a pesar de eso, volvería, tal vez con más tiempo y con acompañantes, para disfrutar de todas esas paradas que me salté de mi itinerario planeado.
