Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease. An untreated syphilis mother can transmit this bacterium to her baby either during pregnancy or during childbirth. It is then called congenital syphilis!
Congenital syphilis could lead to
- Miscarriage
- Stillbirth
- Low birth weight
- Prematurity or
- Infant death soon after birth
Babies born with this disease can have
- Deformed bones
- Low blood counts
- Jaundice
- Problems with the brain and nervous system
- Enlarged liver and spleen.
