The art of surviving marble
I used to think justice was a straight line, a path paved with raw truth. How utterly naive of me. When I received that yellow envelope bearing the court’s official seal, my first instinct was sheer outrage. “I’m in the right,” I kept telling myself, as a cold sweat slowly trickled down the back of my neck. But reason, on the cold marble of the courts, is often a foreign language that ordinary citizens cannot speak fluently.

It was my old friend Valentín, a veteran of a thousand bureaucratic battles, who dropped that blunt verdict on me amidst the smoke of a bitter coffee: “Listen to me, better lawyer up!”. That phrase, which sounds like a worn-out cliché from a police drama, suddenly became my only lifeline. Because a legal proceeding is not a romantic quest for the truth, but a technical choreography of forms, deadlines and technicalities where every misplaced comma tells a different story.
You urgently need someone who knows the ins and outs, who knows which doors to knock on and which dark corners to avoid. Someone who can translate your human anguish into cold legal documents and unyielding precedents. Real life teaches you the hard way that being innocent is almost never enough; you have to know how to navigate the storm with an expert compass. “Better lawyer up!” ceased to be mere advice and became a mantra for absolute survival. In the end, I hired someone who understood the labyrinths that were, to me, insurmountable walls. Only then, under their guidance, did the paralysing fear begin to dissipate a little. I realised that defending oneself is an art.

Creí que la justicia era una línea recta, un camino pavimentado por la verdad cruda. Qué absoluta ingenuidad la mía. Cuando recibí aquel sobre amarillo con el sello oficial del juzgado, mi primer instinto fue la indignación pura. "Tengo razón", me repetía con insistencia, mientras el sudor frío me bajaba lentamente por la nuca. Pero la razón, en el frío mármol de los tribunales, suele ser un idioma extranjero que los ciudadanos de a pie no sabemos hablar con fluidez.

Fue mi viejo amigo Valentín, veterano de mil batallas burocráticas, quien me soltó la sentencia lapidaria entre el humo de un café amargo: "Listen to me, better lawyer up!". Esa frase, que suena a cliché desgastado de serie policial, se convirtió de pronto en mi única tabla de salvación. Porque un proceso judicial no es una búsqueda romántica de la verdad, sino una coreografía técnica de formas, plazos y tecnicismos donde cada coma mal puesta cuenta una historia distinta.
Necesitas urgentemente a alguien que conozca los recodos, que sepa qué puerta tocar y qué rincones oscuros evitar. Alguien que traduzca tu angustia humana en artículos fríos y precedentes inamovibles. La vida real te enseña a golpes que ser inocente casi nunca basta; hay que saber navegar la tormenta con brújula experta. "Better lawyer up!" dejó de ser un simple consejo para volverse un mantra de supervivencia absoluta. Al final, contraté a quien entendía los laberintos que para mí eran muros infranqueables. Solo entonces, bajo su guía, el miedo paralizante empezó a disiparse un poco. Entendí que defenderse es un arte.
