Durante meses, Leonardo y Maribel trabajaron juntos revisando planos, cálculos y materiales. Eran inseparables. Almorzaban juntos; ella conocía a sus hijos; pasaban días que se convertían en noches resolviendo problemas de categoría imposible de descifrar.
Pero la lealtad no se debe otorgar a la ligera.
Un error emergió.
Uno de los ingenieros estructurales detectó una falla crítica en la distribución del peso de los niveles superiores. Si la construcción continuaba así, la torre podría sufrir deformaciones y esto traería consecuencias nefastas.
La noticia explotó en la oficina.
El ingeniero en jefe convocó una reunión urgente. Comenzaron a rodar rumores.
—Van a despedir a alguien —susurró uno.
Leonardo sentía un nudo en el estómago. Recordó que les dieron luz verde a unas modificaciones sin revisar con la excusa de que ese día estaban cansados. Ese día la frase fue: “Después lo corregimos”.
Eso nunca pasó.
Antes de entrar a la sala de reuniones, Leonardo miró a Maribel.
—Pase lo que pase, diremos la verdad. Todo se resolverá.
Ella asintió.
Dentro de la sala, el ingeniero en jefe golpeó la mesa con tanta fuerza que las botellas de agua levitaron.
—¡Quiero saber quién fue responsable de esta estupidez!
Un minuto de silencio se tragó a todos.
Leonardo quiso hablar, pero un tarugo en la garganta lo impedía.
Maribel se adelantó.
—Jefe… yo intenté corregirlo, pero Leonardo ignoró mis advertencias y allí las consecuencias.
Otra vez el minuto de silencio hizo acto de presencia.
Leonardo giró lentamente hacia ella, esperando que dijera que era una broma cruel.
Maribel no respondió a la mirada y continuó.
—Le envié varios mensajes. Incluso le dije que debíamos detener todo, pero él insistió en seguir.
Ahora el tarugo estaba en la lengua de Leonardo; ninguna palabra salió de la impotencia.
No podía entender cómo alguien que había estado en las navidades junto con la familia podía hundirlo así.
Todos vieron cómo el rostro del ingeniero en jefe se tiñó de rojo.
No pasaron dos horas cuando Leonardo abandonó la oficina con la típica caja de cartón entre las manos.
Ella sí que lo lanzó a los leones.
Es un tema de supervivencia.

For months, Leonardo and Maribel worked together reviewing blueprints, calculations, and materials. They were inseparable. They had lunch together, she knew his children, and they spent days that turned into nights solving problems that seemed impossible to crack.
But loyalty shouldn't be given lightly.
An error surfaced.
One of the structural engineers detected a critical flaw in the weight distribution of the upper levels. If construction continued this way, the tower could suffer deformations, leading to disastrous consequences.
The news exploded in the office.
The chief engineer called an urgent meeting. Rumors began to circulate.
"Someone’s getting fired," someone whispered.
Leonardo felt a knot in his stomach. He remembered they had greenlit some unreviewed modifications with the excuse that they were tired that day. That day, the phrase was: "We'll fix it later."
That never happened.
Before entering the meeting room, Leonardo looked at Maribel.
"No matter what happens, we tell the truth. Everything will be resolved."
She nodded.
Inside the room, the chief engineer slammed the table so hard that the water bottles levitated.
"I want to know who was responsible for this stupidity!"
A minute of silence swallowed everyone.
Leonardo wanted to speak, but a lump in his throat prevented it.
