MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "the one on display".

...Often retailers utilize displays to highlight and promote their products. Potential customers can window shop and view some of the items shown in their store windows. These displays give people a hint to what's inside the store if they enter. Every shopping mall that I've visited have stores who display their wares. Otherwise, how would shoppers know if the merchandise is what they are looking for?

You can't just rely on the store's name these days with businesses choosing exotic names for their organizations. However, sometimes, just like human beings, what's shown on the outside may not be suitable for someone once they look on the inside.

For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 3 May 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3092: The one on display.

Below is my story:

Outside nuances vanished as the couple stepped inside the jewelry boutique.

Not much about the jewelry boutique's exquisite inventory impressed Angelica. She sighed heavily. Not even the cascading light showcasing the one on display excited her. Quitting wasn't an option. Several moments later. Brody frowned. With arms crossed, he glanced at his Breguet, shaking his head.

"This pretentious establishment isn't all it's rumored," Angelica sighed ignoring Brody's displeasure. She glanced upward with her hands raised in the 'why me'? position. Several patrons spied, then whispered among themselves.

"You're creating an embarrassing scene," Brody admonished. "Perhaps the reason you can't find anything is because you can't recognize it. You have to be of a certain mindset to appreciate the finer things."

"I beg your pardon!" Angelica jerked back. "What are you implying? That I'm of a lower class than you and your bougie ass mother? This shopping trip was for her. I didn't have nor wanted to, but agreed just to earn points."

She'd finally said it. And it felt good; no matter that half the boutique overheard.

"I'd appreciate it if you'd lower your voice," the saleslady shooed as she hurriedly approached.

"I didn't mean to say...Brody stammered.

Angelica interrupted. "No. You meant exactly what you said," she hissed, staring, but seeing clearly for the first time in a year.

The angst she'd suppressed for months erupted. Standing razor straight, she tugged at her engagement ring. Reaching for his hand, she placed it inside.

Tears arose. Pivoting, she left.

Para mi tema, me inspiré y utilicé la publicación de @daily.prompt de 3 May 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3092: The one on display.

A continuación mi historia.

«No quería decir...», balbuceó Brody.

Angélica lo interrumpió. «No.

Curated!

Thanks so much for the curation @melinda010100. I appreciate the community support. Take care.

I appreciate your visit and view of my story. Thanks for the Ecency community support.

It's always a pleasure!

Right on for Angelica ... and a good thing Brody and his mother showed their hands when they did!

Wonderful writing!

Yes, a good thing they did show their hand before the wedding. She'd a nagging feeling, so he simply validated her suspicions. I can imagine living under the pressure of his mother's scrutiny and condescension.

Thanks so much for your visit and kind compliment for my story. I appreciate it and your support. Take care.

...but seeing clearly for the first time in a year.

Brody's comment is the final crack that reveals their already broken relationship though it takes this outing to help Angelica see it clearly. I'm glad she realises her worth and walks away rather than shrink herself to fit his world. This is a satisfying read! Take care and have a great week. 🌹

At some point, one must take the blinders and love-colored glasses off to see what's truly in front of them. My mother used to say in her one-liner that "if evil is in you, it's got to bubble to the top. You can't help it."

Yes, she realized that even given their riches, theirs wasn't a family she wanted to be a part of. I applaud her too. Thanks so much for your visit @kemmyb and read of my story. Much appreciated. Take care.

Thanks @lee1938 for sharing my story. Much appreciated.
