ENGLISH VERSION
I am going to press a button to make the images flooding social media disappear. They repeat over and over—collapse after collapse—always filled with people. It will take me a long time to return to my routine and feel better, yet I keep watching. What I see is incredibly hard: every departure, every discovery, every black bag filled with a body that, just days ago, was working and hugging family. An emotional stress spike, the doctor said—and it makes sense. Unexpected tachycardia. We hurt ourselves by watching and replaying these images in our minds.
I smile at the stories of survival: someone who was saved because they stepped out of the building for a cigarette; another whose pet refused to enter the building just as the quake began, alerting them when they hadn't yet felt the tremors. These are stories filled with moments and miracles. A child who says a stranger pushed the debris aside to save him and pull him out—never to be seen again; the boy assumed it was Jesus saving him.
There are hundreds of stories that ended relatively well; even though they lost everything, they are happy to be alive amidst so much death.
Press a button and an entire town vanishes—a town full of brave people who endured another natural disaster twenty-seven years ago. What strength these people have; they are full of hopes and families. The worst is yet to come: when everything stops, when the searchers stop searching, when the rescue teams leave because there is no one left to save. They gave their all to save the living. And the people will be left wandering through camps and ruined buildings, not knowing what to do.
Until the moment comes for those who press the button to bring down whatever is still standing. They will clear away the rubble; years will pass, and once again, people will forget that nothing should have been built there in the first place.
