Prainha is one of Madeira's finest beaches — a rare spot with sand in copper and rust tones.

While most other beaches show off pebbles or imported white sand, Prainha keeps its authentic, almost wild texture. That coppery-red sand is a direct inheritance from the island's volcanic past. And this sand has a quiet trick up its sleeve: when a wave rolls in, the water shifts color. Transparent turquoise mixes with dark grains, creating the effect of shimmering metal.

What defines Prainha is its seclusion and a raw ocean experience: no breakwaters, no artificial barriers, just a natural entry that drops off quickly. The beach hides behind a rocky headland, tucked right beneath the road leading to the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula, and is almost invisible when driving past. But in season, you can’t miss it — a chain of parked cars lines the roadside.

From above, a panorama opens up: a compact bay, tightly squeezed between steep cliffs.

Prainha rightfully makes it onto lists of the island's best beaches, but it has a character all its own. The waves here are often serious, so swimming rarely turns into relaxed splashing — it's more of a straightforward encounter with the elements. But the water takes on such an intense turquoise hue that you easily forgive both the long drive to the eastern tip of the island and the seasonal influx of tourists filling nearly every free meter of sand.

Still, once you're on the shore, you quickly understand: the cliffs around you leave no doubt that this is Madeira — a volcanic island with a rough edge. And that unvarnished reality is exactly what creates Prainha's central paradox. It's simultaneously simple and slightly inconvenient. Small, crowded in season, without resort polish — but with character. You won't find postcard perfection here, but you will get that rare sense of a place that doesn't try to meet your expectations.

Maybe that's exactly why it's considered one of the best.
