A salon where Mexican folk art is shared [eng/spa]

One of the cultures I admire the most is the Mexican culture, for the firmness with which it has transcended despite the passage of time. From their way of dressing, to their customs, gastronomy and identity elements, I find them excellent. That is why the place we are going to visit today was extremely attractive to me, since it pays homage to the best of the popular art of that country.
I'm talking about the exhibition hall dedicated to Mexico, located on the second floor of the House built in homage to the Benito Juárez, located on Obra Pia Street in Old Havana. I got to know this place thanks to the summer project Rutas y Andares, which was designed by the Office of the Historian to bring the Cuban family closer to several of the most emblematic heritage establishments in the city.
Rutas y Andares proposes different tours with specialized guides, which is a highly recommended option because it allows discovering different sites from a more academic point of view. However, in the case of visiting Casa Benito Juárez independently, accompaniment is also provided by this institution.

Una de las culturas que más admiro es la mexicana, por la firmeza con que ha trascendido a pesar del paso del tiempo. Desde su modo de vestir, hasta sus costumbres, gastronomía y elementos identitarios, me parecen excelentes. Por eso, el lugar que visitaremos hoy me resultó extremadamente llamativo, ya que rinde un homenaje a lo mejor del arte popular de ese país.
Les hablo de la sala de exposición dedicada a México, que se encuentra en la segunda planta de la Casa que se erige en homenaje al Benemérito de Las Américas Benito Juárez, ubicada en la calle Obra Pía, en la Habana Vieja. Este lugar lo conocí gracias al proyecto de verano Rutas y Andares, el cual fue diseñado por la Oficina del Historiador para acercar a la familia cubana a varios de los establecimientos patrimoniales más emblemáticos de la ciudad.
Rutas y Andares propone diferentes recorridos con guías especializadas, lo cual es una opción muy recomendada porque permite descubrir diferentes sitios desde un punto de visto más académico. No obstante, en caso de que se visite la Casa Benito Juárez de forma independiente, también se brinda acompañamiento en esta institución.

One of the elements that I enjoyed the most in this exhibition hall were the photographs hanging on the walls. Perhaps this has to do with the passion I have for this manifestation of visual art, but the quality of the images is notorious. Most of these photos are portraits of people: the first one I photographed shows a child playing a stringed musical instrument, which is valuable in this space because of the importance of traditional Mexican music. Another of the images shows an elderly lady with a firm gaze, which seems to have been forged over the years. This was undoubtedly my favorite, because although in the photo it cannot be seen, I assure you that when you are in front of this painting, every feature and every facial expression is perfectly defined.

Una de los elementos que más disfruté de esta sala expositora fueron las fotografías que cuelgan en sus paredes. Quizás esto tiene que ver con la pasión que guardo por esta manifestación de arte visual, pero la calidad de las imágenes es notoria. La mayoría de estas fotos son retratos de personas: el primero que fotografié muestra a un niño tocando un instrumento musical de cuerdas, lo que es valioso en este espacio debido a la trascendencia de la música tradicional mexicana. Otra de las imágenes muestra a una señora de edad avanzada con una mirada firme, que parece forjada con el paso de los años. Esta sin dudas fue mi preferida, pues aunque en la foto no logre verse, les aseguro que cuando se está delante de este cuadro, logra definirse perfectamente cada rasgo y cada expresión facial.

In the room there are a variety of ceramic and pottery works, some for utilitarian purposes and others for ornamental purposes. This manifestation is one of the most recognized artisan traditions of Mexico, which dates back to the pre-Columbian period. There are vessels of different sizes, models and styles.
The presence of masks is also abundant, as these have been part of Mexican culture since before the beginning of the Spanish colonization period. They are made mainly of wood, leather and cardboard and represent old people, animals, Afro-Mexicans and fantastic beings.

En la sala destacan la presencia de variedades de obras de cerámica y alfarería, algunas con fines utilitarios y otras con fines ornamentales. Esta manifestación es una de las más reconocidas tradiciones artesanales de México, lo cual data desde el período precolombino. Existen allí vasijas de diferentes tamaños, modelos y estilos.
También la presencia de máscaras es abundante, pues estas forman parte de la cultura mexicana desde antes de comenzar el período de colonización española. Están elaboradas fundamentalmente de madera, cuero, y cartón; y representan a ancianos, animales, afromexicanos y seres fantásticos.

Of course, the colorful Mexican costumes could not be missing. The variety of embroideries and textures abound in this one, which are also declared as cultural heritage of that nation. That area of the room is very unique, because it simulates a scene, from my point of view, of a common family, which can be seen in that region of America.

Por supuesto que el colorido vestuario mexicano no podía faltar. En este abunda la variedad de bordados y texturas, que además se encuentran declarados como patrimonio cultural de esa nación. Esa área de la sala es muy singular, porque simula una escena, desde mi punto de vista, de una familia común, que puede verse en esa región de América.

I found in that room small figures representing the Mexican Catrina, which were among the first elements of Mexican culture that I got to know when I was a student. The most fascinating thing about walking through this part of the room was to listen to the fantastic story it holds.

Encontré en esa sala pequeñas figuras que representan a La Catrina mexicana, que fueron de los primeros elementos de la cultura mexicana que conocí en mi etapa de estudiante. Lo más fascinante de caminar por esta parte de esta sala, fue escuchar la historia fantástica que guarda.
