Africa House Museum: the place where cultures intertwine [eng/spa]

Cuba is an incredible mix of cultures. In fact, one of the most popular phrases we use on a daily basis expresses that "he who is not of Congo, is of Carabali", referring to the genetic heritage and traditions we acquired from the thousands and thousands of people who came from the African continent to the country in past centuries. For this reason, and also with the objective of preserving intact that part of our way of being that defines us so much, the Casa de África museum was created, which is the only one of its kind in the whole island and has a collection of incredible pieces.

Cuba constituye una increíble mezcla de culturas. De hecho, una de las frases más populares que usamos a diario expresa que "el que no tiene de congo, tiene de carabalí", refiriéndose a la herencia genética y de tradiciones que adquirimos de las miles y miles de personas que llegaron del continente africano al país en siglos pasados. Por ello, y además con el objetivo de conservar intacta esa parte de nuestra forma de ser que tanto nos define, se creó el museo Casa de África, el cual es el único de su tipo en todo la isla y posee una colección de piezas increíbles.

The museum is located exactly on Obrapía Street, between Mercaderes and San Ignacio. Nearby you can enjoy other places of tourist interest such as the Casa de la Obra Pía, the museum and park dedicated to Simón Bolívar and the Habana 1791 perfume shop. This place is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary of opening its doors to the public for the first time, and since then, it has provided various services such as the celebration of cultural activities, the support and integration of sensitive age groups such as the elderly and the promotion of study and scientific work.

El museo se encuentra ubicado exactamente en la calle Obrapía, entre Mercaderes y San Ignacio. Cercano a este se pueden disfrutar de otros lugares de interés turístico como lo son la Casa de la Obra Pía, el museo y el parque dedicado a Simón Bolívar y la perfumería Habana 1791. Este lugar está próximo a cumplir los 40 años de abrir por primera vez sus puertas al público, y desde entonces, ha prestado diversos servicios como lo son la celebración de actividades culturales; el apoyo e integración de grupos etarios sensibles como los adultos mayores y la promoción del estudio y el trabajo científico.

The museum has several exhibition halls, but in this publication I will be describing my experience in one of the most fascinating of the whole place, in my opinion, so I hope to read in your comments if you found it the same. This is located on the second floor, and has a collection dedicated to various cultural manifestations and countries of this great continent.
One of the oldest workers of the museum, who also told me that his family has a strong relationship with the African religion, said that many of the natives of African countries, when they visit this museum, are amazed at the state of conservation and respect for their cultural heritage.
The room displays a variety of mannequins wearing typical costumes of the region, which are characterized by the presence of very bright colors or the color white. Both men's and women's costumes are shown, and each of these figures is marked with the country to which the costume belongs.

El museo agrupa diversas salas de exposición, pero en esta publicación les estaré describiendo mi experiencia en una de las más fascinantes de todo el local, según mi apreciación, así que espero leer en sus comentarios si les pareció lo mismo. Esta se encuentra ubicada en la segunda planta, y posee una colección dedicada a diversas manifestaciones culturales y países de ese grandioso continente.
Uno de los trabajadores más antiguos del museo, que además me contó que en su familia tienen una fuerte relación con la religión africana, refirió que muchos de los nativos de países del continente africano, cuando visitan este museo, quedan asombrados del estado de conservación y respeto hacia su patrimonio cultural.
En la sala se muesta una variedad de maniquíes vistiendo trajes típicos de la región, que se caracterizan por la presencia de colores muy vivos o del color blanco. En esta se muestran tanto la forma de vestir de hombres como de mujeres, y en cada uno de estas figuras está señalizado a qué país pertenece el vestuario.

One of the most frequently observed elements in the room are the woven baskets, which are part of African folk art, and have been evolving and developing into items for both utilitarian and decorative purposes. Baskets also played an essential role in African religious ceremonies, and even their weaving patterns have symbolic meanings.
Also shown is a scene of the coffee ceremony, which includes the process of roasting, grinding and preparing the bean of the much-loved product.

Uno de los elementos que más se observan en la sala son las cestas tejidas, que forman parte del arte popular africano, y han ido evolucionando y desarrollando en artículos tanto con fines utilitarios como decorativos. Las cestas también tuvieron un papel esencial en las ceremonias religiosas africanas, e incluso, sus patrones de tejido tienen significados simbólicos.
También se muestra una escena de la ceremonia del café, que incluye el proceso de tostado, molido y preparación del grano del muy gustado producto.

You can also find in this room some stuffed animals that are common in the African prairies, which have been gifts offered by the government authorities of some nations of the territory to the people of Cuba, as a symbol of fraternity, brotherhood and respect.

También se pueden encontrar en esta sala algunos animales disecados que son comunes en las praderas africanas, que han sido regalos ofrecidos por las autoridades gubernamentales de algunas naciones del territorio al pueblo de Cuba, como símbolo de fraternidad, hermandad y respeto.
