History, myths and sea of Neptune's Fountain [eng/spa]

Many of the places I like the most at the moment, I have known by the recommendation of friends, or by chance. That is the case of the place I am showing you today, which is one of the architectural works I enjoy the most in Havana, and to which I arrived on a summer afternoon, where I was waiting for several friends to visit a nearby restaurant. I'm talking about the Neptune Fountain, which has an attractive design and an unbeatable location on Avenida del Puerto.
If you like walking, near this fountain you can organize a lively sightseeing tour, as it has as neighbors the monument to José de la Luz y Caballero, La Maestranza Park and the Castillo de la Real Fuerza.

Muchos de los sitios que más me gustan actualmente, los he conocido por la recomendación de amigos, o por azar. Ese es el caso del lugar que les muestro hoy, que es una de las obras arquitectónicas que más disfruto de La Habana, y a la que llegué en un tarde de verano, donde esperaba a varios amigos para visitar un restaurante cercano. Les hablo de la Fuente de Neptuno, que tiene un diseño atractivo y una ubicación inmejorable en la Avenida del Puerto.
Si gustas de caminar, cerca de esta fuente se puede organizar un animado recorrido turístico, pues tiene como vecinos el monumento a José de la Luz y Caballero, el parque La Maestranza y el Castillo de la Real Fuerza.

The first element to highlight is that this fountain is located right on the Malecon, so it is visited and photographed by hundreds of people every day.
It is also very accessible to all visitors arriving to the city, since it is right in front of a bus stop for buses destined to support the tourist activity in the city.
This work is made of white marble, and is very impressive because of the way Neptune is positioned with his trident in his hand.
As king of the seas, according to Greek mythology, he symbolizes protection for all those who sail it, and I can even imagine the sailors asking this deity to have an excellent voyage. The sculpture has other significant elements related to the marine world such as the large shells that are part of its structure.

El primero elemento a destacar es que esta fuente está ubicada justo en el Malecón, así que es visitada y fotografiada por cientos de personas cada día.
Además es muy accesible para todo el visitante que llegue a la ciudad, pues junto en frente tiene un punto de parada de los autobuses destinados a apoyar la actividad turística en la ciudad.
Esta obra está confeccionada en mármol blanco, y resulta muy imponente por la forma en que está posicionado Neptuno con su tridente en la mano.
Como rey de los mares, según declara la mitología griega, simboliza protección para todos los que lo navegan, e incluso logro imaginar a los marineros pidiendo, a esta deidad, tener una excelente travesía. La escultura tiene otros elementos significativos relacionados con el mundo marino como lo son las grandes conchas que forman parte de su estructura.

Behind this piece hides a very beautiful story. It was built during the mandate of the Captain General of the island of Cuba, Miguel Tacón, and was brought from Italy. This fountain, besides adorning Havana's Malecon, in its time had the purpose of supplying drinking water to a maximum of three boats at a time.
It is a pity that the fountain was not in operation during my last visit, because it is a beautiful spectacle when water emanates from it.
Being the keeper of such a beautiful history, I consider this fountain an important point of visit when sightseeing in the capital.

Detrás de esta pieza se esconde una historia muy bonita. La misma fue construida durante el mandato del Capitán General de la isla de Cuba Miguel Tacón, y fue traída desde Italia. Esta fuente, además de adornar el Malecón habanero, en su época tenía como finalidad abastecer de agua potable a un máximo de tres embarcaciones a la vez.
Es una pena que la fuente no estuviera en funcionamiento durante mi última visita, pues constituye un espectáculo precioso cuando emana agua de ella.
Siendo guardiana de una historia tan bonita, considero que esta fuente es un importante punto de visita cuando se hace turismo en la capital.

Another attraction of this place is that it offers a unique view of the iconic Christ of Havana, which stands on the other side of the city.
I am particularly fond of the sea and its boats, so watching how they are moved by the swaying of the waves is a magical moment for me.
This visit to Neptune's fountain was made during midday, which is the time when the sun shines the brightest. However, if you like to see many of the city's fishermen at work, it is best to arrive around sunrise or sunset.

Otro de los atractivos de este lugar es que ofrece una vista única al icónico Cristo de La Habana, el cual se erige justo del otro lado de la ciudad.
Particularmente soy amante del mar y sus embarcaciones, así que observar cómo son movidas por el vaivén de las olas es un momento mágico para mí.
Esta visita a la fuente de Neptuno la realicé durante el horario del mediodía, que es el momento donde el sol brilla con más fuerza. No obstante, si gustas de ver a muchos de los pescadores de la ciudad en su faena, es mejor llegar cerca del amanecer o al atardecer.
