A Disappointing Last Day of School
Hi, my lovely @motherhood folks, it’s a pleasure to stop by. I hope you’re having a wonderful day. Over here, I’m at work. They organized a staff training session for the hair salon team. I’ve already had my hair cut, and now I’m in line waiting to get my eyebrows done. So while I wait, I’m taking the opportunity to write to you about today’s little story from school.
Yesterday afternoon, the teacher sent a message through the WhatsApp group saying that classes would run until today, on their regular schedule. In other words, today was her last day of first-grade classes. So even though Ámbar wasn’t really in the mood to go, we got up really early and got her ready for school.
Since it was the last day and they hadn’t said yet if they were going to have a farewell party—and my little princess was really looking forward to that—but given the situation in the country and the fact that we’re in a period of national mourning, it’s unclear, because some schools have held them and others haven’t.
But the point of telling you this story is that we went to school and saw that there were practically no children there. I told the janitor that the teacher had posted in the group chat that there would be classes today, so I walked with my daughter all the way to the classroom—which we don’t usually do, since we always drop her off at the gate, as the children are supposed to go in on their own.
The teacher came out of the classroom, and there wasn’t a single classmate there. I asked her why they hadn’t said there were no classes. She replied that there were classes, but that no one had come except Ámbar. The truth is, it really made me angry. Because we wasted our time.
Besides, the teacher wasn’t empathetic at all; she didn’t even say hello to the girl, let alone say goodbye. I was the one who had to wish her a happy vacation—which was the very least she should have said to her student. Honestly, I was really upset.
The teachers told me, “If you want, you can leave her here and we’ll teach her by herself,” in a sarcastic tone, but Ámbar was about to start crying, so of course I took her home. I asked her if they were going to make her share a class, and she simply said no, so we left.
The important thing now is that my two little princesses are already on school break; they’ll still be going to their basketball and track and field classes, which they love.
To all the kids who are already on break, I hope you enjoy it, get some rest, and make the most of your time. May God bless you all.
