The Korean movie industry are doing very well in many aspects pertaining to entertaining their viewers, I'm a big fan of their movies and series but over time, I've learned that one of the main reasons I enjoy their movies more is, their original soundtracks. I'm always listening in for a new soundtrack that will have me mesmerized.
In the last year and early this year, I've seen a lot of Korean series that were not only interesting and fun to watch, a few of them had OSTs that has stuck with me since I finished seeing them. Some of the OSTs, I had to download while still seeing the series to tell how much I love them. Here are my current top 5 kdrama and their OSTs.
Lovely Runner (2024)
My most favourite on this list in terms of the storyline and how excited I was about it from start to finish. The time travel, starting love story over, the music and the comedy in this series are all top notch. A celebrity who dies and his die-hard fan time travels back in time to save him from dying again. I love two songs from this but...
"Spring Snow" by 10cm
I'm choosing to share only this OST from the series because of the slow burn love I developed for it. I was more hyped about the other OST until I started to listen again and I just couldn't help but chose this one over the other songs. It's a beautiful song that expresses the storyline best - About falling slowly, going back and waiting.
Love All Play (2022)
The worst kdrama series on this list for me because of the dull or should I say boring female lead. It's a series about the game - Badminton and I actually enjoyed the game scenes, feeling the excited to see who wins in every rounds. On the romance part, the female actor didn't do justice to her role. But the OST in it hits me right.
"When The Doors Open" by JT Marcus
The beat, the lyrics and the style of this song, I love everything about the song but what the lyrics means is my favourite part. It's a powerful song about not giving up even after you've given your best, running fast towards the open door no matter the number of eyes watching to discourage you. The song speaks resilience.
At A Distance, Spring Is Green (2021)
A 12 episode series full of lessons about youthful age, the struggles and hurts people go through but try to live through it. Three young people whose lives are not as smooth as they seem get together as friends as they navigate through life's trouble, falling in love too. I'll highly recommend this one for families to see and the OST? Perfect!
"We Will Be Not All Together" by Han Seung Yun & Rothy
This has to be my second favourite OST on this list and it's not because of the lyrics this time, just because of how it blends so well with every scene it is played in. It's a duet song that is packed with melody and dynamic. A sad song about letting go even when there is still love but giving the option of running away together.
18 Again (2020)
A comedy series but more than that, it's a series that shares more light on family love, friendship and past regrets. A man thinking he has gone wrong with his life since he was 18 wishes to get another chance and the impossible happened, he becomes 18 again and have to understand his family better. Only one song stood out for me.
"Hello" By Sohyang
An OST that did not just fit the storyline perfectly but was sang so softly by the artist, a song that brings calm feelings just by listening. It has a beautiful meaning about love, remembering the past to make amends in the present and loving forever no matter the mistakes made. I had this song on a steady repeat when I first listened to it.
Cinderella at 2am (2024)
The most recent kdrama series I've seen and it has my favourite soundtrack, I was skeptical about seeing the series because of it's title but I'm glad I did as it introduces me to a new favourite song and an artist, Yeonjun, to check out. A lady decides to break up with her boyfriend after finding out he is a chaebol heir, but fails.
"Boyfriend" by Yeonjun
I'm sure you can already guess that it's almost like this soundtrack was made for the storyline specifically. Aside the title, the lyrics hits well for the scenes in the story and I love the artist's energy in singing the song. It's a love song but one about a kinda unrequited love that is obvious and mutuality, perfect for the main characters.
So that's the end of the list and I'd love to know which of the series you've seen and if you do remember soundtracks from movies you see.
