RE: FAMILY STUGGLES IN CUBA & THE BBH FOUNDATION

in LeoFinance11 days ago

Hi @bradleyarrow, I just wanted to share a bit more context about how things are currently working in Cuba, in case it helps you better understand the situation.
Right now, the state is barely selling anything in CUP anymore, and much less subsidized products. Most of what people buy in CUP is actually from small private businesses, where prices are set based on the informal exchange rate — which is now over 500 CUP per USD. This makes even basic goods very expensive for ordinary families.
MLC stores were once a good option, but today many of them are quite understocked and offer very little variety. Recently, another system has become more relevant: the “classic” cards and BANDEC prepaid cards, which are also funded with USD. These are currently the stores where you can actually find better quality and more consistent products.
As an additional note, transportation is another major issue. Right now, one liter of gasoline is over 4000 CUP, while many people’s salaries or pensions do not even reach that amount, often being around 3500 or 4000 CUP. This drives transportation prices very high, making it extremely difficult to move from one place to another, whether for work or even to see a doctor.
I also want to say that what you’re doing is truly meaningful. Supporting that family the way you are is a very noble act, and as a Cuban myself @noraydaap, I deeply appreciate your effort. You are truly making a difference.
Thank you for caring and for trying to understand our reality.
