It seems life has a way of taking you by surprise at times - I started this Saturday morning feeling like any other weekend; hopeful and full of plans, but then I got a little sick on the spot that would definitely change my life.
The cool air blew in our nostrils as the family gathered at the house for our weekly cleaning. There is something so scrumptious about having our living spaces clean with other people. Simple joy of family work filled our lungs as we sucked, mopped and cleaned up our house and compound.
My schedule was very well laid out. I finished cleaning and ate my breakfast and then took a shower and prepared to begin with my daily tasks. Different bodies need different schedules though.
It hit me hard. Just as we finished putting everything away it hit my body in all kinds of alarming ways. The runny nose was the first, then a really bad headache rolled in like crazy thunder. I was sweating everywhere. It felt as if I had just completed a marathon. The timing couldn't be any worse. I was coming off recuperation from a fever earlier in the week and was trying to get back to my routine.
In that panicked panicked moment I frantically searched our medicine cabinet in search of any sort of emergency relief. The headache just got worse and worse with each second - my vision was getting blurry and I was realizing that I had a losing battle against this type of sudden illness.
In moments like these, our bodies will tell you what exactly they need. I had a begging body. With barely enough energy to get to my bedroom, I suddenly slipped on the bed like a tree falling. As soon as I put my head on the pillow I suddenly lost my mind and I entered into a deep sleep.
After four hours... It seemed like a couple of minutes. When I opened my eyes, it was only partially but not entirely transformed. The agonizing headache had subsided, and my nose had stopped running. That was a hope for me. Of course it was just that. New problems came along with it, and now my mouth was starting to feel like desert, and my legs were starting to cramp, like a sailor trying to make it on dry land.
As night fell I watched as my body looked back at the other side of the day which turned out a bit differently to what was expected. Our bodies are so resilient in the way that it is easy for us to just relax and recover. So with that in mind I went back to bed and planned to rest more. But tomorrow would have to include a visit to the pharmacy to get my prescription filled.
This experience reminds me modestly that health is our most precious asset. It can flip in an instant, making our best-laid plans wishes. Sometimes the best thing to do is just listen to our bodies and give them the rest they so desperately need.
To anyone who has been struggling with such abrupt health problems, take heart - it is perfectly fine to pause, take a break, and focus on healing. From time to time, our body does give us hints; the trick is knowing how to interpret them and responding appropriately. Caring for our health, whether resting adequately, keeping hydrated, or consulting a doctor when necessary, ought to always come first.
With treatment and proper care, strength will eventually be restored. It’s important to remember that tomorrow offers new possibilities. In the meantime, sometimes, what we can do strongest is confess our weakness and allow ourselves to heal.
The weaker we feel, the more we are willing to confess our weaknesses; however, the steps to restoring health are not permanent, unlike the self-care taught during the process. It is essential to treat yourself with kindness because the outcome will be rewarding.
