I absolutely love the toucan birds and my favorite is not even real, it's in a movie. The toucan bird in the 1997 film George of the Jungle called Tookie. The bird acted as George's loyal messenger that alerted him to any danger. But I never really asked myself why they had the big long beak.
This is how they sound
I used to think that the toucan's beak was for decoration, like why would you carry a giant beak around when you just want to eat some fruit? Well apparently I was wrong.
The beak is basically a way for the bird to cool down. When the bird gets too hot and let's be honest, those tropical forests can be very hot, the bird's blood flows to the beak and the heat is released into the air through the beak. So the toucan doesn't overheat. Very smart body system if you think about it.
The toucan's beak looks solid from the outside, but it has lots of tiny blood vessels inside of it. I saw somewhere that the toucan's beak is actually more efficient than most manmade cooling systems or something like that. Either way, it works well enough that the toucan can live in conditions that would probably kill other animals.
So what appears to be a burden, that is a really big, awkward beak is actually vital to its survival. I completely misjudged it but still admired it mostly because I love the George of the jungle movie and the role they made the bird play in it.
The toucan is on hold not concerned with how we see it. It's just sitting there in the heat and doing what it does best, which is to stay comfortable, while virtually everything else around it is sweating like crazy. Nature can be really creative when it comes to solving problems we might never think of.
Some animals have some advantages but I'm yet to see a living with all advantages to be indestructible. If that even exists I'm sure the scientists would have studied every part of it.
