Well, by the time he apologized, a lot of time had already passed—about fifteen years, I think; I ran into him by chance on a bus. Who knows if, at that moment, he might have thought that things could have turned out well and that, deep down, it wasn’t so bad after all; he probably did think that, since he was also a young man with little life experience.
