Day 2 – Line Practice & Control

in Sketchbookyesterday

I’ve started a 15-day daily drawing course with a clear goal in mind: to become a 2D digital artist . While digital art is my main focus, I’m also open to exploring other drawing materials because I believe art offers endless possibilities. But before diving into different tools and styles, I know I need to build a solid foundation.

That’s why I asked ChatGPT to help me create a structured 15-day course—something to guide me as a beginner cartoonist and help me improve step by step.

I understand that 15 days won’t be enough to master everything. There are many different styles, techniques, and areas of art still to explore. But I believe it’s important to start somewhere. As I move forward, my direction will become clearer, and I’ll be able to adjust and refine my learning path along the way.

Day 2 – Line Practice & Control

Goal: Improve control of your pencil and build muscle memory for clean, confident lines.

-I know you know him , he is the naughty Sin Chan . Im drawing him according to my last task for DAY 2 learning process -

You can check the last task at the end of today exercise list .

**Warm-Up **

Use a full page for this:

  • Straight lines: Draw horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines from edge to edge—don’t use a ruler.
  • Ghost lines: Hover your pencil above the paper, move in the air first, then draw it down smoothly.
  • Wavy lines: Practice big and small waves.
  • Loops and figure 8s: Like cursive “e” and “s” on repeat.

Do each 2–3 times across the page.

✅ **Line Confidence Practice **

You’ll practice drawing without sketching scratchy lines.

Exercise: Draw 30 straight lines across the page using your shoulder (not just your wrist).

  • Try this:

    • One stroke per line. No redrawing.
    • Use a stopwatch: 10 seconds per line.
    • Vary lengths: short, medium, long.

Repeat with:

  • Curved lines
  • C- and S-shapes
  • Big circles with a single stroke

✅ **Line Weight Control **

Cartoons often use line thickness to show style, depth, or importance.

Try this exercise:

  • Draw the same shape (circle or box) 5 times.

  • Each time, apply:

    1. Light pressure (thin line)
    2. Medium pressure
    3. Hard pressure (thick line)
    4. Start thin → go thick
    5. Thick outline + thin detail lines inside

Do this with other shapes too—hearts, arrows, etc.

✅ **Copy Practice **

Draw from a cartoon or simple comic panel. Use any book, online cartoon, or even cereal box art. Try to retrace the lines by eye (not by tracing on top).

  • Focus on matching the line direction and curve flow
  • Don't worry if it doesn’t look perfect—this is control practice

📝 **Reflection **

  • Which line felt easiest?
From the exercise , i feel that making line feel easier by using wrist .

  • Which was hardest?
The hardest part is to draw short line in 10 seconds without stop . But , i realize that making the short line in 10 seconds getting easier if i put pressure on it.

  • Did your lines improve by the end?
Yes , i feel that my stroke is getting better after making the same repetition strokes.

It was the end of today exercise , im looking forward to learn more thing in day 3 lesson.

Nice! Line practice is key for strong basics. Keep exploring! 💪🐴

Thanks so much for the encouragement .
