Ya boy has been on a weird history kick lately... the kind of stuff you just stumble on when you're supposed to be doing something else. today we're talking viking ships.
and no I ain't talking about the show... which was kinda decent for a few seasons then went off the rails. I'm talking the actual boats. it's kinda wild when you really think about the engineering these guys pulled off. these longships were basically the perfect tool for what they wanted to do. which was mostly show up unannounced and ruin everyone's day, eh.
the design was just smart as hell. they were long, narrow, and super light. and the keel design meant they could sail in really shallow water... like just a few feet deep. so they weren't just stuck to the open ocean they could sail right up rivers and hit towns that never saw it coming. imagine living in some inland village and suddenly a bunch of angry dudes in a dragon-headed boat show up. must have been terrifying. no deep water port needed, they could just beach the thing anywhere and hop out.
and teh construction was something else too. they used this clinker-built method... overlapping planks of wood. made the hull flexible but strong. so it could handle rough north atlantic seas but still be fast as hell. they had a big single sail for cruising but also had oars for when the wind died or for extra speed during a raid. a total utility vehicle of the sea. these guys were master craftsmen for sure. no blueprints no CAD software... just generations of knowledge on how to buikd a boat that worked. it's all just raw, practical skill.
it's just a reminder that smart engineering ain't new. people have been solving problems with what they have for thousands of years. anyway, that's your random history lesson for the day. back to the grind.
