Greetings everyone!
I did a lot of crazy things while I was young, and that was due to the village setting I grew up in, coupled with the freedom we enjoyed as children. We had a good time playing football and going for different types of hunting, such as rabbit hunting, mango hunting, cashew hunting, and many others.
In my village, crickets are edible, and we enjoyed eating them. I know there are many types of crickets, but the one I’m referring to is the type that is edible in Nigeria.
If you know that cricket very well and you're used to them, you'll know that there's a way they pack the sand when they make their house in the ground. If you don't know, it sometimes appears like how the sand rumbles when feces are left on the ground for two days. You know that look where the sand rises up, right? That's how crickets heap the sand where they build their house in the ground.
One day, during the cricket season, my friends and I went into the bush to hunt for crickets. We were with cutlasses and a can where we would put the crickets once we caught them by digging them out of their house in the ground.
Under the mango tree, I saw a heap of sand and didn’t hesitate to grab my cutlass to dig it. Just when I was digging, I put my hand in to pack out the sand to make the digging smoother. Then I packed out decaying feces. Jeez! I couldn’t believe my eyes—my right hand was stained with the smelly, decaying feces.
I quickly went to where big leaves were and used my hand to rub on them in a bid to wash off the feces from my hand. My friends, upon seeing that, began to laugh and roll on the ground. I was so angered, and the worst thing was that there was no water around to be used in washing off my hand.
After I managed to clean it off a little bit, I angrily picked my things and headed home. That was it—that was the end of the cricket hunting for that day.
Thanks for reading.
