16 postcards with Easter eggs & stuff

in Hive Collectorsyesterday (edited)

Hive Collectors community have suggested this theme - Easter decorations, and though I did not respond momentarily, I do have something to present you; the topic was tailored like exactly for me. 😎 Beware - this might be a long reading (and watching). Not that I consider myself a real collector of Easter eggs, but still - accumulated some stuff thru the years that without douts can be considered a small but original collection.

I've heard that during Holy Week in Spain, you can see picturesque processions of people carrying palm leaves and olive branches on the streets; they symbolize Jesus's arrival in Jerusalem, when people greeted him with palm branches. This is one of the traditional symbols of the holiday. In my country, the palm is an exotic plant, and since the Middle Ages, it has been replaced by the willow.

The pussy willow is one of the first plants to adorn its still-bare branches with beautiful "catkins" in early spring. They grow everywhere, and are a common and accessible plant. On the eve of the holiday, many flower vendors sell pussy willow on city streets and at markets. Those in a hurry, or who consider it beneath them to pick a few branches on the street or in a park, can buy them from the aforementioned vendors.

I brought home one branch of flowering pussy willow from a recent trip to Zelenogorsk, now it decorates our dining table - and I hope it will last for a few weeks.

Another solid Easter symbol is an egg (a symbol of the soul). Decorating Easter eggs is a whole other topic; to cover it in detail would require several blog posts. Every year, my wife (and I, and now our daughter) sit around a basket of eggs on the eve of the holiday and transform them into works of art!

There are various techniques and secret family traditions, as well as simply familiar and convenient methods—everyone discovers their favorites over the years. One of the simplest and most accessible methods is to boil eggs with onion skins. The effect resembles marbled paper, and the orange-brown color can be varied and customized.

Some of our friends decorate Easter eggs this way, but we have a different method – we use (non-synthetic) threads from our old stash.

First, we wrap the egg several times with threads of different colors, trying to create the shape of a cross. Then, the eggs are boiled in water; the hot water draws the dye from the threads, mixing the colors in an unpredictable way (different threads have different intensities)—an alchemical marriage that transfers to the shell.

I take a break from the process to take photos. The most interesting and surprising part of the process is, of course, unwinding the threads and examining the finished product. It's a truly analog process, and the exact outcome cannot be predicted in advance.

This year, our new family member also took part in the Easter preparations. He can't dye eggs and is very bad at winding threads, but he's an excellent unwinder! real PRO, an absolute champion at this endeavor.

2026-apr-1175w-h.jpg

Intermediate result: the water has been removed, all that remains is to remove the wound threads.

2026-apr-1244w-h.jpg

Thats a slightly meditative and pleasurable part...

2026-apr-1241w-h.jpg

The result is gradually revealed...

2026-apr-1245w-h.jpg

...sometimes it's not at all what you expected :)

2026-apr-1769w-h.jpg

This egg has the most even, perfect cross. And the uniform light gray background is the result of mixing different colors. Incidentally, a very beautiful, deep, and interesting gray color is achieved by boiling it with hibiscus tea leaves. I highly recommend trying this recipe someday.

Oh, and keep in mind: for thread dyeing, you need natural cotton threads! They're dyed with natural dyes and will release their colors into the water. Synthetic threads dyed with synthetic pigments are unlikely to release their colors into the eggs.

Easter eggs go together well with Easter cakes.

2026-apr-1419w-h.jpg

I won't boast, but my wife over the years has got a very high skill for Easter cakes baking. She cooks them basing on yeast-free starter, and boosts with a good doze of spices and soft nuts. This time she produced 10 pieces — some we gave away to our parents, friends, and our daughter's godmother.

2026-apr-1407w-h.jpg

My usual participation is encouraged at the final stage, where I photograph the finished product, and my daughter helps prepare the icing and decorates the kulichi straight out of the oven—she loves giving them colorful tops. But this year, my role expanded: I sourced the spices and ground the cardamom seeds in a mortar, as well as finely chopped turmeric and nutmeg. (No one documented the process of grinding the spices in a mortar, so I can't show you any photos.)

And here I planned to show our modest collection of Easter eggs we accumulated thru years, which we dried up and saved - the most outstanding specimens, a pleasure for an eye that one's hand simply does not rise to break up.

2026-apr-1758w-h.jpg

But... it's impossible to embrace the unembraceable, so perhaps I'll wrap up my blog here. To be continued... Maybe.

Happy Easter!

You did a great job, but I see you had an assistant, this little kitten 🙂

Yes, we have this toddler which brings a lot of happines to our small family.
But I should note, my part of the job (mostly) was camera - it were wife and babygirl who did the best part.
!PIZZA

What a wonderful family tradition!
The eggs turned out truly unique; I'd never heard of using thread before.
My egg that day was a regular one, dyed with onion skins, and no one could break it. Probably because it wasn't store-bought, but homemade.

Yeah, onion-skin is a very accessible and convincing and well-known receip.
Threads is more complicated... Oh, and do look and appreciate this post. (Even though it is 5 days old, hehe).
This is result I love even more! We tried doing it this way a few times as well.

Happy Easter! and Hive !PIZZA your way.

100 eggs, Karl...!
I missed this post, thanks for pointing it out – I love her posts!
!BEER

I noticed that too, but frankly speaking I was more attracted with quality rather than quantaty. What else can I say - she might have many friends and relatives, so she need a lot of eggs to congratulate all the crowd. Which ofc is a good thing! 🐤🐤🐤

Happy Easter, my friend.

Life brings us surprises... when a new kid (or kitten) appears in a family, there may be a lot of them. 😘 kitty does not aloow us to feel bored, !LOLZ. Let me treat you with Hive !PIZZA back. Hope everything is good for you and your family too.

Now I take a look at them again and I'm absolutely delighted with all the eggs, they're each so unique and beautiful, true little works of art. The technique with threads is brilliant, I'm definitely stealing that idea for next Easter. On top of that, I would love to learn how to decorate them with wax, or dye them and then scratch patterns into the color, but that really takes a steady hand and a God-given talent. <3

Thank you. a !BEER back 😘
