Another happy case ended with me unpacking the lightest postal envelope with hands shaking from greed... another tiny step towards filling my first album. (However, everything is relative, depending on how you count, it can be called the fifth... if you count all its predecessors. But one way or another - now this is my basis and the largest album, heavy, desktop version that you can't easily drag around with you. It is complemented by a portable version of A5 format - if you count in order, this is album number four; with it I can bring stamps somewhere to a meeting, if there is a need to exchange, demonstrate / brag about the collection, etc.).
By the way - the envelope had no stamps attached, it was franked by machine (you see the imprint of the cash register). I often see this on American and English letters... without stamps such envelopes seem to me having not enough of 'postage' essence in them. What is there to collect, where are the stamps, where is the beauty?..
Sorry, I got distracted. I'll continue telling about new acquisitions.
On May 20, I obtained 26 lots from a Moscow dealer - each separate lot contained 1 stamp. Costed me 1230 roubles (15 USD). Initially I selected 31 stamps to purchase - but while I leisurely examined the stamps at his display ... other people bought five stamps I marked as 'wanted'. I was in no hurry because the seller announced he was on vacation and paused processing orders. So, I hesitated in vain... I was a bit upset and momentarily pressed 'BUY' button to reserve at least the rest of my wanted list.
This was a case when the pause between "See the goal - see no obstacles!" moment and receiving it, was sufficient - about three weeks long. The postal delivery itself (registered letter) took as much as 4 days, the rest was just waiting seller's back to business. Waiting, certainly, increases the value of the purchases, to some extension. Well, the value is not correct word to use here; the pleasure of resulting transaction was meant.
So... what did I obtain today?
I buy very few Russian stamps, although I like and find some of them interesting - it's just that my attention is primarily directed to other places and times. Speaking about Russia, I am primarily interested in stamps from the Civil War (1918-1920), and the later years of the Russian Empire, its imperial colonial relations with other countries (China, Persia, the Levant, etc.)

This is a beautiful series, unfortunately pretty expensive when it has perfect collectible condition (stamps without cancellation) - all the set may cost 250-300 dollars, but lower denominations with cancellation are not that rare and can be purchased for just 20-50 rubles (less than 0.5-0.8 USD). This seller offered a very attractive price tag, and most importantly, the stamps had minimal cancellation mark that does not disfigure the stamps, does not spoil the perception, does not ruin the pleasure of watching these stamps. (We will return to discuss this delicate and controversial issue at some point).
I got 7 early soviet stamps and non-perforated quarterblock. The stuff I did not collect in the past - but it attracts me, so everything may change in the future. My stamps album has too much blank pages, hehe!
These imperforate stamps were issued in 1922 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution, in denominations of 5, 10, 25, and 45 rubles. The lower denominations are usually more common-spread and less expensive which is a tempting reason to jump on the deal. And then you almost inevitable start considering to get your hands on entire series. 😜 And as soon as this goal is achieved - you start dreaming how to replace the imperfect copies with ideal ones.
The process of collecting is an endless race towards perfectionism, towards the horizon, towards a dream (a series of dreams to be precise)...

In this picture, a naked man, barely dressed in some remains of his clothes, is doing his hammer job; he is a proletarian. The soviet state has taken away all rights to the means of production (in the Soviet state, no one had the right to own any property! Everything was common, everything belonged to everybody - and nobody in particular, hehe. Sounds crazy isnt it?) ...so, the soviet state pays to all the workers a beggarly small salary, but exploits them 10 times more than the damned bourgeois capitalists. Therefore, this man most likely will die soon -- from hunger, cold, exhaustion, backbreaking work. This is the secret symbolism of these stamps, which you can read if you know the context. The designer who developed the stamps visuals, of course, intended to say something very different.

Here is a mourning stamp issued in 1924 to commemorate the death of Vladimir Lenin, the founder of Soviet state. (A great man, a visionary, an effective politician). I always wanted to own such a stamp in my collection. There exist versions in several denomination, with and without perforations... in general, this is a very expensive stamps series, I rarely see it on sale and simply could not afford myself to obtain a good edition of it.
This certain stamp was not too expensive... pretty cheap, actually: 21 rubles to be exact (=25 cents), due to the ugly fat cancellation mark, which usually ruins the stamp and makes impossible getting any pleasure from your ownership. I rather consider such stamps as the placeholder / filler category (the stamp is in your album, series complete, etc etc. Something like that).

Еще один счастливый кейс завершился тем что я распаковываю трясущимися от жадности руками легчайший почтовый конверт, в котором судя по его виду могла уместиться разве что коробка сигарет. Еще один малюсенький шажок к наполнению моего первого альбома.
(Впрочем, все относительно, смотря как вы будете подсчитывать, его можно назвать и пятым... если считать всех его предшественников. Но так или иначе - сейчас это мой основой и самый большой альбом, тяжелый, десктоп-версия которую не сильно потаскаешь с собой. Его дополняет портативная версия формата А5 - если считать по порядку, это альбом номер четыре; с ним я могу принести марки куда-нибудь на встречу, если возникнет необходимость поменяться, продемонстрировать / похвастаться коллекцией, etc).
(Кстати, сам конверт безмарочный, франкирован машинным способом - вы видите оттиск кассовой машины. Я часто вижу такое на американских и английских письмах... без марок подобные почтовые отправления кажутся мне неполноценными, ненастоящими, не очень почтовыми. Ну что тут коллекционировать? где красота?..)
Так, я отвлекся. Возвращаемся обратно, к рассказу про новые приобретения в коллекцию.
Еще 20 мая я приобрел у торговца из Москвы 26 лотов - каждый лот содержал 1 марку (в основном). На самом деле, планировалось больше... но пока я изучал другие его лоты, пять марок купили другие люди. Поэтому это был случай, когда между моментом "вижу цель - не вижу препятствий!" и получением в руки желаемого возникла пауза.. длиной в три недели. Сама почтовая доставка (заказное письмо) заняло немного, всего 4 дня. Ожидание конечно увеличивает ценность приобретений.
Что же я получил сегодня? Немного императорской России, немного раннего СССР, Германия, Австрия и еще немного отдельных мелочей.
Здесь необходимо сделать небольшое отступление. Я покупаю очень мало русских марок, хотя некоторые из них мне и симпатичны и интересны - просто в первую очередь мое внимание направлено к другим местам и временам. Говоря о России, меня интересуют в первую очередь марки времен Гражданской войны (1918-1920), и поздние годы существования Российской империи, ее имперские колониальные отношения с другими странами (Китай, Персия, Левант etc)
Три марки с российскими императорами 1915 года, - из юбилейной серии "300 лет царствующему дому Романовых". Это интересная и красивая серия марок, к сожалению в идеальном коллекционном состоянии (марки без гашения) вся серия стоит конских денег (250-300 долларов), но младшие номиналы с гашением - совсем не редкость, можно приобрести за 20-50 рублей (меньше 1 доллара). Этот продавец предложил очень привлекательный ценник, а главное, марки имеют минимальное гашение которое не уродует марки, не портит восприятие, и не отбирает у меня удовольствие от разглядывания марок. (К тебе гашения марок мы еще вернемся, чтобы обсудить этот щекотливый и неоднозначный вопрос).

Младшие номиналы как обычно стоят недорого и это заманчивый повод чтобы начать. А потом поневоле начинает хотеться заполучить в свои руки всю серию. Когда и эта цель выполнена, начинает зудеть одно место - как бы заменить неудачные экземпляры марок на идеальные. Процесс коллекционирования - это бесконечная гонка к перфекционизму, к линии горизонта, к мечте.
На марках голый человек еле одетый в остатки одежды, трудится молотком. Это пролетарий. Государство отобрало в свою пользу все права на средства производства (в советском государстве никто не имеет права владеть собственностью! все общее, все принадлежит всем, и никому в частности) и платит всем рабочим нищенски маленькую зарплату, зато эксплуатирует их в 10 раз сильнее чем проклятые буржуи-капиталисты. Поэтому этот человек скорее всего скоро умрет, от голода, холода, истощения, непосильной работы. Такая вот символика у этих марок которую вы можете прочесть, если владеете контекстом. Дизайнер-создатель марок, разумеется, хотел сказать не это...
А вот траурная марка, выпущенная в 1924 году по случаю смерти Владимира Ленина - основателя советского государства. Существуют версии марок с зубцовкой и без ... вообще это очень дорогая серия, я просто не мог себе позволить хороший экземпляр. Эта марка стоила мне небольших денег - 21 рубль, чтобы быть точным - благодаря безобразному жирному гашению, которое обычно разрушает марку и делает невозможным всякое удовольствие от владения ею... я отчасти склонен числить такие марки по категории placeholder / filler (марка есть, плюсик поставлен, гештальт закрыт, типа того). Ну, про остальное напишу уже завтра.
