When we talk about religion, religion is the way that we worship God. It might be a deity or anything, but we must worship God in spirit and truth.
It's a way which martyrs try to relate with their spiritual being or what they serve. When we talk about religion, it brings God into that of you. Just as we go to school to receive education, religion is that channel how we connect with God and any deities that is being believed in.
