The life that we are having in the world iw not such that gives us the peace and the rest which we desire. Especially, for those who are not earning enough money as can give them the basic necessities of life. So many people are still living below the poverty line. To such people there is a burning desire everyday for a rest from all the suffering and hardship which they are experiencing earth. If we say that there are those who are rich enough and have as much luxury and pleasure in life as they desire, how about the numerous health challenges? Are we not hearing of those who have money and are battling terrible incurable diseases? In all of these, we desire a rest.
The children of Israel used to have one day in the week as a sabbath day. That day they ceased from all their labours. They were commanded in the law of Moses to keep that day holy. There was no work which should be done in that day. It was the Sabbath of rest. Did this sabbath actually give them rest? No, they did not cease from the troubles of life. So, that rest which Moses gave them in the law was not the real rest. They still needed the rest which the Messiah would bring.
We are all expecting this rest. It is the rest which the Lord Jesus Christ has offered to us. Everyone who believes in Jesus has entered into his rest. Many of the Jews did not enter the promised land because of their unbelief. We should not make the same mistake. Let us believe in Jesus so that we will enter into the true rest.
