For the first time this season there is snow in the weather forecast for this weekend. It sounds like it will be a wet, chilly, windy weekend and that means that the beauty of autumn will begin to disappear.

These rodents are common in the woods and in cities, too. Known for its gray fur, bushy tail, these omnivores primarily eat nuts, seeds, and buds. They play a vital role in the ecosystem by burying and forgetting nuts, which helps with seed dispersal. I've had trees begin growing in flower pots and other odd places after squirrels have hidden a nut!

These photos were taken in Chicago in my kids neighborhood. There are already many leaves on the ground, but the weekend weather will cause more to fall from the trees. I'm enjoying the last of the beautiful autumn display.

These hydrangea blossoms are past their prime, but they will provide winter interest until we have a heavy snow fall and they are pushed to the ground and buried. The roses will continue blooming in the snow until we start getting much colder temperatures and then we will have to wait until they put out new growth in the spring before we see roses again.

Enjoy some of our last autumn colors with me!
