Where in scripture do you get free will?
So you mean nobody, no one at all, can do any good thing according to Protestant teaching? How sad.
This isn't a teaching. It's the Bible. Read it.
Old Testament sources:
Genesis 6:5
“The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”
Psalm 14:1–3
“There is none who does good.
The Lord looks down…
They have all turned aside…
There is none who does good,
No, not one.”
Psalm 53:1–3 (parallel to Psalm 14)
“There is none who does good,
No, not one.”
Psalm 130:3
“If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins,
O Lord, who could stand?”
Ecclesiastes 7:20
“There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins.”
Jeremiah 13:23
“Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots?
Then you also can do good who are accustomed to doing evil.”
Jeremiah 17:9
“The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?”
New Testament Sources:
Matthew 7:18
“A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.”
(Jesus teaching that fallen man = bad tree → cannot produce truly good fruit without new birth.)
John 6:44
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.”
(Shows inability to come to God.)
Romans 3:10–12
“There is none righteous, no, not one;
There is none who understands;
There is none who seeks after God.
…There is none who does good, no, not one.”
Romans 7:18
“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.”
Romans 8:7–8
“Because the carnal mind is enmity against God…
So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”
1 Corinthians 2:14
“The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God…
Nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
Ephesians 2:1
“You were dead in your trespasses and sins.”
(Dead men cannot do good.)
Ephesians 2:8–9
“By grace you have been saved… not of works lest anyone should boast.”
Philippians 2:13
“For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”
(This teaches that even the willing and the doing of good comes from God, not us.)
You say
So it follows that because of Him we can do good things/works when we open ourselves to Him.
Where do you get this in scripture? It's not there.
You keep talking about Protestant and Catholic teaching. I'm talking specifically just scripture. If we can't trust that what is written is true, then what do we have. I don't listen to the teaching of any man, just God's word. If you can show me one place in the Bible that teaches men can do good on their own then I'll concede. It's not there. I've read the Bible 5 times. It's not there at all.
