Most of the time when we find a reproduction of something from many years ago, it is similar but not quite the same. When my youngest son opened up one of his Christmas presents and I saw it was the Ninja Turtles van, I was curious. He opened it up and started getting all the pieces out of the box. Even without all the accessories added, I could tell it looked incredibly similar to the very same van I had as a kid.

So this is the original. A guy can sit in the chair door, which pops out. The orange tray below the door holds two big torpedo-shaped bombs that fall out when the door swings open. There's a blast shield in front that flips up and down, and to open the side door and unleash the bombs you simply push down on the yellow spoiler to flip the top up.
Modern Reproduction
This is the version my son has. The stickers are all very similar, although some are slightly different. Pretty much everything looks the same on the door. The tray holding the bombs has some extra ridges added, but that's about it.
The mirrors, lasers and even the satellite-dish-looking device on the van are all the same.
For all intents and purposes, this is pretty much the same Ninja Turtles van I grew up with as a kid. Even the hinge mechanism for opening the top is the same.
I don't know if Playmate still had the plans lying around or what, but the fact that they recreated this to be almost exactly how I remember the original van is a credit to them. Talk about a huge wave of nostalgia hitting all at once!
It's no surprise to me that, much like myself when I was a kid, it didn't take long for the mirrors and satellite dish to fall off from driving it around and bumping into things. Did that stop me from having fun? Absolutely not, and it was such a joy to see my son enjoying it just as much as I did when I was young.
