I had some time free on this New Years Day so when the temperature had risen enough from the hard frost this morning I set out for a ride. By the time I left the temperature had recovered quite a bit to about 6°C. That is comfortable enough to be out for a while.

All signs of frost had disappeared, but the ground was very wet indeed. I strayed off the hard tracks and got very muddy indeed as my picture shows.

So, when back to sensible riding on harder surfaces, I noticed the sea birds had decided to settle on the icy ponds. I took pitures at two different ponds where they were just standing there on the ice!

Nature is behaving very strangely. I spotted a pair of Egyptian geese with three very young goslings. Not long hatched! Thats crazy for this time of year.

There are signs of new life everywhere now, including lots of shoots and catkins appearing. I have seen daffodils in full bloom too around town.

The lakes looked very cold and icy, not a place to spend too long although it's nice to get out for a spot of fresh air, and to welcome in the new year. Lets hope it's a good one!
