We enjoyed a seasonal surprise at a country pub today. Morris dancers were performing at the Frog and Nightgown.
A traditional Mayday and Whitsun celebration performed by men dressed accordingly with bells, sticks and waving handkerchiefs. This originated in the 15th century as a court entertainment but by the 19th century had almost disappeared.
After a revival in the 20th century it has continued until today.
We were not aware of this at all so to turn up at the pub to see this was delightful on a warm spring evening.
