Tuesday Mechanics lane New Bedford MA

Mechanics Lane, New Bedford MA

Recently a few people on Facebook after I shared a few photos of historic buildings there asked me if I had visited Mechanics lane.

Well, I had not heard of it till then, so of course I had not visited there, but one morning after a sunrise walk, I swung by there to check it out, and I must say I am glad I did. It's a very cool small street, well more of an alley, I guess, it's pretty narrow.

Let me tell you what I found out about it online.

Mechanics Lane is a cobblestone alley in downtown New Bedford, MA, running between North Sixth and Eighth Streets. Designated a Local Historic District in April 2023, it is lined with 19th-century cottages that originally housed the tradesmen and craftsmen—or "mechanics"—who built the city during the whaling era

This historic alleyway and its immediate vicinity feature a dense, cohesive group of working-class homes built between the early and mid-1800s. Originally stretching from County Street to Purchase Street, only the block between North Sixth and Eighth Streets remains intact today, nestled just west of City Hall.

Here I am at one end of the alley, looking down it, you can see all the way to the other end

This is the first house I saw, not sure if strictly speaking it's part of the Lane or a house on 8th Street, but I thought it was pretty cool, so here it is.

Number 47 Mechanics Lane, such a cool building, and I love the style of the lamp also. Some or many of the properties have signs on them; this one, the Green Sign, says Charles Shannon Baker.

The cobblestone street and style of these houses make one feel they have gone back in time, well, except for the modern cars, which I managed to edit most of them out in these photos

And I thought I had to do a black and white edit adds to the timeless feel.

And that’s all folks
