In this section, I will no longer be handing out STARBITS, as those entries are not allowed. However, I will continue to share high-quality songs, share how I discovered them, and share some interesting facts about them. To top it all off, I will also include several tables with the statistics compiled by the Rising Star game.
Since May, I have been creating a playlist to keep track of the latest songs I have discussed in my posts. This will help me remember whether I have already talked about a song before or not. The most recent one is Still Waiting from the canadian band Sum 41.
Checkmate: Cypress Hill
My song of choice on Spotify for today's post is Checkmate from the band Cypress Hill.
The story of how I discovered Cypress Hill is not new, and I believe I have shared it several times in other publications, so there is not much mystery surrounding it. In general, it all comes from the same place, which was when I started getting more into hip-hop after watching the documentary Straight Outta Compton, which tells the story of N.W.A (Nigga With Attitudes). Before that, the genre wasn't something I listened to often, beyond the occasional song I knew by name or had heard once or twice, like Still Dr. Dre.
After watching the documentary, I was curious to start looking for more music of that genre. I started with the most common, listening to songs by N.W.A., Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Nas, 2Pac, The B.I.G Notorious and other related artists. From there, Spotify started recommending a lot of songs and groups that I already knew by ear, but had never searched for on my own. One of those cases was Cypress Hill, which is one of the most important bands in the genre.
The first song I heard was Insane in the Brain, which is one of those songs you hear a thousand times, but maybe never wonder who made it. That led me to listen to more songs by the group, add several tracks to my favorites, and continue exploring their discography, fascinated by what I was finding. One of the songs I liked the most is one of the band's lesser-known tracks: Checkmate. There's also a Spanish version of it, which is really good.
Cypress Hill is a hip-hop group from the United States formed in the late 1980s. It was made up of members with Latin roots and others of African descent, such as lead vocalist B-Real, second rapper Sen Dog, and finally the group's DJ and producer, the renowned DJ Muggs.
They released their first album in 1991, with the same name as the band. The album was quite successful and allowed them to make a name for themselves on the local scene. However, the band's greatest success would come with their second album: Black Sunday. It was released in 1993 and featured several hits such as Insane in the Brain, I Wanna Get High, When the Shit Goes Down, Hits from the Bong, and finally I Ain't Goin Out Like That.
Checkmate was released in 1998, at a time when the group had already established itself as one of the best in the genre. This song was not a huge commercial success, but it was one of the best they released for the album IV.
