Good evening everyone!
In this section, I will no longer be handing out STARBITS, as those entries are not allowed. However, I will continue to share high-quality songs, share how I discovered them, and share some interesting facts about them. To top it all off, I will also include several tables with the statistics compiled by the Rising Star game.
Since May, I have been creating a playlist to keep track of the latest songs I have discussed in my posts. This will help me remember whether I have already talked about a song before or not. The most recent one is Bitter Sweet Symphony of the british band The Verve.
Magia Blanca: Turf
My song of choice on Spotify for today's post is Magia Blanca of the argentine band Turf.
My history with Rock En Español began in my early childhood. At home, influenced by the music my mother listened to in her youth, I always heard Argentine rock songs by artists such as Charly Garcia, Andres Calamaro, Spinetta, and bands such as Los Abuelos de la Nada, Virus, Sui Generis, and Seru Giran.
Then, when I reached adolescence, it coincided with the success of a music platform called Spotify. This gave me much easier access to music, and that's where I found new songs to listen to. In terms of Argentine rock, I started listening to songs by bands from the 2000s such as Attaque 77, Ciro y Los Persas, Divididos, Callejeros, La Beriso, No Te Va A Gustar (despite being Uruguayan), and La Mancha de Rolando.
My choice today is a song created by a band that was quite successful during that time. But I got to know it in a rather different way. For those who don't know, I'm quite a soccer fan, at least at the local level, so I've been a fan of my team, River Plate, since I was a kid. In one of the most important finals I played in a few years ago, the band Turf was brought in for the opening show to perform the song “Y vamos vamos millonario” (Let's go, millionaires). Unfortunately, we didn't win that final, but I'll always remember the band playing their hearts out and the River fans in Peru cheering them on, giving the Brazilian team Flamengo a run for their money.
Argentine soccer fans are the most creative when it comes to writing lyrics to cheer on their team. Most of them are reworkings of popular Argentine songs. In this case, “Y vamos vamos millonario” is the song “Pasos al Costado,” which is the group's most famous song, reworked into a soccer chant.
However, my choice today is not “Pasos al Costado” but another song that is quite famous by the group: Magia Blanca. I discovered the song a few weeks ago when I tried the Spotify song recommendation tool and ended up finding this song, which became one of my favorites by Turf.
