In this section, I will no longer be handing out STARBITS, as those entries are not allowed. However, I will continue to share high-quality songs, share how I discovered them, and share some interesting facts about them. To top it all off, I will also include several tables with the statistics compiled by the Rising Star game.
Since May, I have been creating a playlist to keep track of the latest songs I have discussed in my posts. This will help me remember whether I have already talked about a song before or not. The most recent one is In The Air Tonight from Phil Collins.
Survival of the Fittest: Mobb Deep
My song of choice on Spotify for today's post is In The Air Tonight from the iconic artist Phil Collins.
For this occasion, I'm going to bring you a song by a well-known group from one of my favorite genres, hip-hop. I've been aware of this group's fame for a few years now, but I had never taken the time to listen to some of their songs to understand why. It's quite strange, because I was always looking for artists and bands all the time, so I consider myself to be very knowledgeable about music in this genre.
So the other day, when I was looking for songs from different genres and using Spotify's tool that recommends songs based on the content of each playlist, I ended up with a recommendation from that same group called Mobb Deep. It's one of the group's most famous songs: “Survival of the Fittest,” which also led me to listen to another of their most recognized works: Shook Ones, Pt. II and Hell on Earth (Front Lines) and Quiet Storm
Beyond those four songs, I haven't found any other songs by the group that have caught my attention. In fact, there is a clear difference of millions of plays between these four songs and the rest of the group's songs.
Mobb Deep is a hip-hop duo from the east coast of the United States. The duo was formed in 1990 under the name “Poetical Prophets” and consisted of Albert Johnson (Prodigy) and rapper Kejuan Machita (Havoc).
They released their first album in 1993 under the name Juvenile Hell. The album was not a major success, but it helped them gain a following in the New York rap scene. It features some moderately famous songs such as Hit It From The Back.
True success would come with the release of their second album, The Infamous, which featured two of the biggest hits the duo has released since its formation. I'm talking about Survival of The Fittest and Shook Ones, Pt II. The Infamous was such a huge success that Mobb Deep never quite managed to match its impact with the albums that followed.
