In this section, I will no longer be handing out STARBITS, as those entries are not allowed. However, I will continue to share high-quality songs, share how I discovered them, and share some interesting facts about them. To top it all off, I will also include several tables with the statistics compiled by the Rising Star game.
Since May, I have been creating a playlist to keep track of the latest songs I have discussed in my posts. This will help me remember whether I have already talked about a song before or not. The most recent one is I Love Rock'N Roll from the band Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.
The Streets: WC, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg.
My song of choice on Spotify for today's post is The Streets from the artist WC, Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg.
Since my teenage years, I have been listening to one of the music genres that has had the greatest impact on my life: American hip-hop, mainly old school. My first experience was playing the online mode of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, better known as SAMP, where I played with a group of friends on a role-playing server. On these servers, you play a character in a world that tries to resemble real life as closely as possible.
At that time, we used to play a gang of African Americans, something like the Crips. So we did things in the game that a gang member would do, like listening to that great old-school music. Some friends would set up a device called a Boombox where you could put a streaming link to listen to music. Some of the most popular artists were Snoop Dogg and the famous Wiz Khalifa.
It would be at least three or four years before I came into contact with the genre again. By this point, I had some knowledge of the genre, knowing the most famous songs, but I had never delved deeper into it. But everything would change when I saw the documentary Explicit Lyrics, which tells the story of the gangsta rap group N.W.A (Niggaz With Attitudes). I was surprised to see that several artists I knew were part of a band, which led me to research the genre much more.
At that stage, I started looking for music by good artists who perhaps weren't as well known internationally, discovering artists such as Eric B, Nas, Rakim, 50 Cent, and groups such as Compton Most Wanted, Westside Connection, N.O.R.E., and Nate Dogg. One of the songs I liked the most during my search for new songs was “The Streets” by WC, featuring the genre's most famous celebrity: Snoop Dogg.
At first, when I read the name of the song and the collaborators, I thought it was about the group Westside Connection (a well-known group that Ice Cube was part of), but it turned out not to be. WC is an artist who began his career as part of various hip-hop groups, sharing the stage with artists such as Coolio. Although he is sometimes confused with the group Westside Connection, WC was actually part of this group during an important stage of his career, alongside Ice Cube and Mack 10.
