In this section, I will no longer be handing out STARBITS, as those entries are not allowed. However, I will continue to share high-quality songs, share how I discovered them, and share some interesting facts about them. To top it all off, I will also include several tables with the statistics compiled by the Rising Star game.
Since May, I have been creating a playlist to keep track of the latest songs I have discussed in my posts. This will help me remember whether I have already talked about a song before or not. The most recent one is It's On from the legendary gangsta-rap artist Eazy-E.
Un Poco De Amor Francés - Patricio Rey y Sus Redonditos de Ricota
My song of choice on Spotify for today's post is Un Poco De Amor Francés from the argentine band Patricio Rey y Sus Redonditos de Ricota.
After talking about hip-hop songs, soundtracks, country, reggaeton, and pop from the 70s and 80s, I want to return to my other favorite genre: rock, mainly Argentine rock. At the height of the rock ‘n’ roll era, Argentina was, in my opinion, the Spanish-speaking country that contributed the most iconic artists and bands. The influence of the genre in my country is so strong that there are still many active bands, something that is perhaps not so common in other parts of Latin America, where music and genres have changed over time.
During my childhood, I was strongly influenced by Argentine rock. It turns out that my mother spent her adolescence and youth during the golden age of this genre, so every now and then, to reminisce about those times and enjoy that music, she used to play several rock hits on an old speaker we had. That's how I ended up listening to songs by bands like Los Abuelos de la Nada, Seru Giran, Sui Generis, Virus, Soda Stereo, and artists like Charly Garcia, Gustavo Cerati, and Pappo. At the time, I had no idea who the authors of those songs were, but I remembered the melodies perfectly.
For my selection today, I thought for a long time about which band to choose. I came up with one of the most recognized and popular bands—without being one of my favorites—which holds several records, such as the world's largest mosh pit. I'm talking about Los Redonditos de Ricota, Indio Solari's band, which has one of the most famous hits in Argentine rock: Un Poco de Amor Francés. That's why I ended up choosing this song.
Patricio Rey y los Redonditos de Ricota is an iconic Argentine rock band formed in the 1970s in La Plata. It was made up of the famous vocalist El Indio Solari, guitarist Eduardo Beilinson, drummer Rubén Avalos, vocalist Virginia Gámez, and finally saxophonist Willy Crook.
From the beginning, they did not release albums, but rather released individual songs, thereby gaining a small audience that would fill the occasional theater. It took more than a decade after their founding for them to release their first album, titled Gulp! This album was quite successful nationally, thanks to songs such as La Bestia Pop, Yo No Me Cai del Cielo, and El Infierno Esta Encantador Esta Noche.
However, the best album the group released during their career would be their second, called Oktober, released in 1986. It featured several of the group's greatest hits that are still enjoyed today, such as Ji Ji Ji, Fuegos de Octubre, Motor Psico, and Canción Para Naufragios. This album ended up consolidating the group's position on the national scene and giving them the recognition they deserve.
Un Poco de Amor Francés was released six years after the second album, on a record they titled La Mosca y la Sopa. It was another huge success nationwide, featuring other songs such as Mi Perro Dinamita, Tarea Fina, Salando Las Heridas, and Queso Ruso. Los Redonditos remained active for a few more years, but they were never able to replicate the success of their most famous song: Un Poco de Amor Francés.
