In this section, I will no longer be handing out STARBITS, as those entries are not allowed. However, I will continue to share high-quality songs, share how I discovered them, and share some interesting facts about them. To top it all off, I will also include several tables with the statistics compiled by the Rising Star game.
Since May, I have been creating a playlist to keep track of the latest songs I have discussed in my posts. This will help me remember whether I have already talked about a song before or not. The most recent one is Survival of the Fittest from Mobb Deep
Una cerveza: Rafaga
My song of choice on Spotify for today's post is Una cerveza from the iconic cumbia band Rafaga.
Since my teenage years, I have listened to different genres of music regardless of the social status of that music or other aspects. I have listened to a lot of Latin American rap, as well as one of the most popular genres in my country, which is usually listened to by people of lower social status, such as cumbia (with the exception of other modern groups such as Marama, which is aimed at a higher social status).
In Argentina, one of the most popular styles of cumbia is cumbia villera. Although many of its songs do not stand out for their artistic quality, there are some tracks that I can highlight, such as Duraznito and La Cumbia de los Trapos by Pibes Chorros, Mujer Yo Te Amo by Mc Caco, Pibe Cantina by Yerba Brava, and many songs by the group Damas Gratis, led by renowned artist Pablo Lezcano.
Then we have other cumbia groups that are not specifically of the villero style, but rather aim for a much more festive sound, one that is never missing from a family gathering. One of the best examples of this would be Los Palmeras and Amar Azul, two highly renowned cumbia bands in Argentina whose songs are always played at family gatherings in my country.
The group I have chosen today fits more with the latter type of cumbia, and that is the iconic group Rafaga. I heard a few of their songs during my teenage years, but I never found out who wrote them or anything, so I officially discovered the band a few months ago thanks to Spotify. That's why I've chosen his most iconic song for today's selection: Una Cerveza.
Rafaga is an Argentine cumbia group with more than ten members, founded in 1994. Their first album was released two years after their formation and was a national success, positioning them firmly in the cumbia industry with songs such as Llámame, Pensando En Ti, and Quisiera Contarte.
With that strong foundation, in 1999 they released their album Imparables, which cemented their position as one of the most important groups in the national industry. It featured their biggest hits, such as La Luna y Tú, Mentirosa, Baila Para Mi, and Maldito Corazón.
"Una Cerveza” was released as part of one of the band's most recent albums, published in 2016, two decades after the group was founded. It is the band's main and most popular song, with almost 200 million plays on Spotify and 120 million views on YouTube.
