Music has always been the path to living well and for this reason, music can be said to be life. In life, nothing is to be compared to music and this is because of its influence on the life of humans and when talking about the influence and effect of music on human life, we would not but mention the therapeutic aspect of music which has really helped in saving lives and making people heal of their emotional and mental health.
As if that's not enough, music like i used to say has always brought life to the lifeless lives and makes events and the society lively.
Having said this, one thing is that music doesn't just exist, but its existence is in styles and that is why when talking about music, we should have it at the back of our mind that it's the umbrella body for different types of musical styles or genres.

So, when talking about the different styles of music, then we would be talking about the gospel style, the Fuji style, we also have the reggae style of music and not to forget the Apala style of music, also, we have the hiphop style of music and so on and so forth. But one thing about all the styles and genres of music mentioned is that they are all uniform when it comes to the elements that makes them music which includes beat, sound, rhythm, lyrics and so on.
So, all these elements combined together bring all the styles under one umbrella which is music. So, without all these elements, there would be nothing as music. It's these elements that makes different styles or genres of music, music.
Having said that, I would like to go back to the topic of the prompt which is about the most popular style of music. To me, every style of music is popular and there's is no less popular music. The only difference is that, there's factors that determine the popularity of different styles of music. Some of these factors include time and location. These two factors determine the popularity of music and I would like to talk more on these two factors as they can affect the popularity of music. I will also talk about the most popular style of music in my own area as this is where location is a major determinant of musical styles popularity.
Now, to start with, I would start with time, like the popular biblical saying that says, “there's time and season for everything on the planet earth.” to be sincere with us, there's really time and season for the popularity of different style of music as well. In my own area and from my own part of the world, we have actually had some musical styles that have ruled the world in their own era. These particular style of music really moved the foundation of the world in their own time and people were like, that's the end of music as they believe no other style can come forth again. I could remember in those days in my area when reggae music of Bob Marley was in vogue. Whenever you go to any party at that time, you would and must listen to the reggae style of music, but that was then.
Also, there's times when Fuji music by the Fuji maestros Sikiru Ayinde Barrister and Kollington Ayinde were ruling the world. By then, these two fuji music stars and their style of music were the one ruling this part of the world, but also, that's then as they were not as vibrant and popular as then.
We also at some point have music styles of juju and apala reigning in their own time as well, but it got to a time that they were not as vibrant and popular as they were in their own time again.
Though, some of these styles are still doing well and are still popular, but not as then when they were moving the world. It's only the ones with evergreen status that are still relevant till now. Not only that, also those of them that were able to upgrade from their musical level then to what's now in vogue are still making waves in the musical world.
Though, some of those styles are still trending but with new and creative artists who have been able to metamorphose from what it used to be to what's obtainable now.
Also, on the topic in question, the location is also a determinant to the popularity of musical styles. What this means is that all music is local and its popularity has to do with the location of its production. For example, the fuji style of music is known for the people of Nigeria and most especially for those that come from the southwestern part of the country and for this reason, this type or style of music is prominent among the yorubas of the country. Though, music is a universal language that's well accepted by everyone. But even at that, some of the styles are indigenous to some part of the world.
But while still talking about the popularity of musical styles, there are some that are kind of general, maybe because of religion where we have gospel music and maybe because of social life that takes Hiphop as its brand and style of music.
So, for my area and in this era of ours and in my opinion, the most popular musical style of our time is hip hop music. The popularity of this style can't be overemphasized and this is because it defines what goes on in society. Not only that, the trends of things in society and the world at large makes hip hop music and their composers and singers the most popular set of musical styles and musicians in our world today. So, the latest fashion and attire are always gotten from hip hop music.
Also, my research about hip hop music is that it's always on the lips of everybody in town and even unites all religions and tribes together through the spirit of music.
I'm a teacher and at a public school, even the dullard can sing hip hop songs from the beginning to the end and this is to show that hip hop music is a popular music. Even as religious as I am, I too still love to listen to hip hop music, but the decent ones.
So, the two determinants of musical style popularity are time and location and these two factors in my opinion would be my own gauge of musical style popularity which is Hiphop.
