I'm Back In Business

I'm so happy, and I've got myself sorted out with my computer.

My new setup isn't as good as the old one, but at least I've got a bit of space to work.

For the last, I'd say, 5 or 6 months, I've been without a Laptop, which was my main source of work while at home.

My PC and nearly all of my personal belongings are back in my hometown at my dad's place, which was fine, because I was constantly back and forth for work, staying occasionally, or in general just dropping in when I had to get stuff done, which required a bit more power than my laptop.

For example, my Laptop was okay for some light editing work, writing, and doing my eBay stuff. But if I wanted to put an extended amount of hours into editing larger projects, I had no choice but to head to my dad's for a while to get some work done.

When the laptop went, I was basically left with nothing. Essentially, any writing I wanted to do was done on my phone; it wasn't ideal, and it took much longer, and it got to the point where I just didn't even bother.

We had a bit of a clear-out down here, though, and I managed to carve out a small corner in one of the rooms where I could set up and bring the Beast down here. It's good because now I have so many more options for what I can get done down here, and that in and of itself is great.

I was offered a few days a week editing, and with this gig, it goes without saying that the PC would be the best option. I'm delighted to have that bit of work, and even happier knowing that there'll be no issues when it comes to editing.

For any previous editing gigs I had, they were a bit of a struggle, primarily due to the laptop not being able to keep up. I'd have to take consistent breaks to let it cool down, and that alone made even an easy job a nightmare to achieve.

The game on screen in that picture is The Old Republic, the Star Wars MMO created by Bioware.

It is a lot of fun, and for months now, I've wanted to get back onto it. The laptop wasn't really able to handle much gaming, so even just for entertainment purposes, having my PC down here is a major plus.

I have a shelf back home which I'm thinking of mounting above it so I can move some stuff around and make some space on the desk itself. But what I'll also be able to do is set up some consoles and do a bit of streaming again.

To put it into perspective, I haven't had full use of this machine since before Kaleb was born (2 and a half years), so for me, this is like getting a computer for the first time.

That's my little life update, and what a nice update it is. Watch this space, folks; some cool things are going to start happening.

Welcome back mate!

Thanks man, it has been a while but I'm getting back into the swing of things now. How have you been keeping?

I don't play games, but every time I edit a video I think I ought to upgrade my PC as it's pretty old. It has plenty of memory, but you need CPU and/or GPU to do this stuff efficiently.

In our old house I used to have my computer in the spare room. Then child one came along and I had to shift it into our bedroom. When we eventually built our current home I made sure I had my own study that is also the music room. I just should have made it more sound-proof :)

A few years ago, I was delighted when we moved into a new place, and they had this tiny room that I was able to use as an office/ storage room for things I didn't want in my bedroom. Sadly, I don't have a space like that where I am currently, but hopefully, soon we'll be able to move out and into our own place.

A few little upgrades wouldn't go amiss, and for Music production and sound design, you wouldn't know yourself if you had something nice and nippy. It doesn't even have to be too wild: a decent GPU that's compatible and a good M.2 hard drive, and you'll be flying. You can get some info on your hardware you've got now, and there's a site you can add everything to, and it'll give you a list of compatible parts that you can pick up. That's how I managed to build my machine; otherwise, I wouldn't have had a clue. If you're buying a new CPU, it would probably be easier to buy a new motherboard too.

You're technically minded yourself, but if you want a bit of help, I don't mind looking into it too and helping you pick some parts.

I've built loads of computers, but I'm out of date on current hardware. I was looking at a local company who builds them. I could take one of their setups and customise it to my needs. I would go for a tower as I have a few hard drives I can use, but I know NVMe is the in thing for fast storage now. I think some video software can exploit graphics cards, so that could improve things a lot. What I have now is so old that it is not worth upgrading. I will probably look for something next year.

Nice ! I look forward to seeing lots of lovely lore coming our way 😁

I might also have to talk to you about editing at some point - do you focus mainly on line editing, or the higher level plot editing ?

Oh, I was talking about video editing, but I can chat about writing editing too as I have a little bit of experience, but mainly from doing my own stuff and just picking up little tidbits of information along the way.

What are you looking to edit? I'm more than happy to take a look and help out as needed; we could hop onto a call sometime to go through some stuff.

Also, 100%, I'm looking to delve back into lore, I'll check out some of your prompts and get a shot of inspiration.
