Paz has been my pet since 2019 when I moved into my new house; she belonged to my ex-sister-in-law, and since I don't feel ready to have more complex animals, I decided to adopt her for my garden.
Since then, she has lived in my garden, and although like any pet she needs attention and care, in the case of these animals it is more complicated because she does not bark or meow, she does not complain, she does not make a sound; only with her gaze or at least her walk have I learned to understand her and be able to attend to her needs.

Paz es mi morrocoya desde 2019 cuando me mudé a mi nueva casa; era de mi ex cuñada y como no me siento preparada para tener animales más complejos, decidí adoptarla para mi jardín.
Desde ese entonces, vive en mi jardín y aunque como toda mascota necesita atención y cuidado, en el caso de estos animales es más complicado porque ella no ladra o maulla, no se queja, no emite sonido; solo con su mirada o al menos su caminar he aprendido a entenderla y poder atender sus exigencias.

En cuanto a la comida.
Acá en mi país tenemos la falsa creencia que estos animales se alimentan solo de plantas y lechuga. Ciertamente, les encantan las flores rojas, la lechuga, la auyama y muchas frutas de las cuales le proveo diariamente, porque si algo tiene ella, es que come todos los día; conozco otras tortugas que pueden pasar días escondidas y no comen, pero ella todos los días y a toda hora puede comer 🤣.
However, this food myth makes them sick. I didn't know that they ate chicken, meat, and even their own feces to feed themselves and get the nutrients they need for growth. The main characteristic of poor nutrition is noticeable in their shells, known as “pyramids,” which are not smooth and dark.
Unfortunately, Paz has a bumpy shell, which tells me that she is not eating well and is lacking calcium. To address this problem, I have had to include “human” food in her diet. She loves it and has taken to it very well, but sometimes she doesn't want to eat it, so I alternate it with the natural foods she likes. I have also given her calcium tablets, but I think they make her constipated, so I give them to her sporadically to help her heal and recover her shell.
I should mention that I also give her treats like raisins and dried fruit. Sometimes I'm surprised by how much she suddenly likes mangoes, and I have to keep an eye on some of my mother's plants because she has eaten them all and I have to replace them. It all depends on what she wants to eat that day 😊.

Sin embargo, este mito de la comida, las enferma. Yo desconocía que ellas comían pollo, carne y hasta sus heces para alimentarse y sacar los nutrientes que necesita para su crecimiento. La principal característica de una mala alimentación se nota en su caparazón, conocido como "pirámides", que no tiene un caparazón liso y oscuro.
Paz lamentablemente tiene su caparazón con bultos, por lo que me indica que no tiene una buena alimentación y le falta el calcio. Para atacar ese problema, le he tenido que incluir en su dieta comida "de humanos". A ella le encanta y lo ha recibido muy bien, pero a veces se pone que no quiere comer eso y entonces le alterno con las comidas naturales que le gusta. También, le he dado pastillas de calcio, pero creo que eso la pone estreñida y por ende, se las doy esporádicamente para ayudarla con su sanación y recuperación del caparazón.
Quiero decirle que también le doy sus antojos como pasas y frutos secos, a veces me sorprendo como le gusta de repente mango y tengo que estar pendiente por algunas plantas de mi madre que las ha comido toda y tengo que reponerlas. Todo va a depender de lo que quiera comer ese día 😊.

I like to watch her when it rains, because she is like me. When the first raindrops fall, she walks very fast and bathes a lot. Nature is wise, and everything is perfectly aligned. Just like plants, animals are nourished by the falling water, and she loves to bathe. I assume that with the heat, it is a relief for her.

También, he visto que las personas no le dan agua. Por mi parte, yo le doy agua todos los días y la baño; las temperaturas extremas a la que está expuesta, ocasiona que se deshidrate. La considero tal cual como si fuera yo y creo que eso la está ayudando en su recuperación por dentro.
A mí me gusta verla cuando llueve, porque es como si fuera yo. Al caer las primera gotas de lluvia, camina muy rápido y se baña muchísimo. La naturaleza es sabia y todo está perfectamente alineado. Así como las plantas, los animales se nutren con la caída de agua y ella le encanta bañarse. Asumo que con el calor, es un alivio para ella.
