There was a man i worked under early in my career who carried himself with a kind of settled confidence i found genuinely impressive. Decisive. Never seemed rattled. Walked into rooms like he already knew how everything was going to go.
I spent a lot of time assuming he had access to something i was missing. Some level of certainty about life that i had not reached yet but would eventually, once i had enough experience and enough knowledge and enough years behind me.
Then i got to know him properly, the way you only do when professional distance disappears a little. And i found out he was figuring it out the same as everyone else. Had doubts he did not share in rooms. Made decisions with incomplete information and hoped for the best the same as any of us. The confidence was real but it was not built on certainty. It was built on being comfortable moving without it.
That was the thing i had gotten wrong. I was waiting to feel certain before i moved. Waiting to have enough answers before i committed to directions. Watching people who seemed sure of themselves and assuming their sureness came from knowing something i did not.
But certainty is not something that arrives after enough preparation. It is mostly an illusion. The people who look certain have usually just made peace with the fact that you rarely get to know how anything turns out before you begin it. They act anyway. The confidence comes from that willingness to move without guarantees, not from having found a way to eliminate the uncertainty first.
Nobody is walking around with life fully mapped out. Not the person whose career looks exactly right from your angle. Not the couple whose relationship appears solid. Not the person whose confidence in a room makes you feel like you are still a work in progress by comparison.
Everyone is navigating with incomplete information. Some people have just stopped waiting for the map before they start walking.
