š¶Four Tune Friday! On Nineties Friday!š¶ Picking & Talking Four Tunes + Bonus Tune! When āPunkā Went Full Pop! šø Green Day & Blink-182 & No Doubt & Offspring!

On this weeks Nineties Friday I try to mix it up and I bring ya tunes that got a ton of play! I often go with lesser known songs but this week I thought letās go as big as we can! Full on Pop tunes from four bands who all started in the punk or ska scene! I donāt just pick songs from big records, I go full pop & pick the songs they crossed over to pop top 40 radio. I know some listeners might not love it but I wanted to try something different since I often avoid these songs.

Iāll post some discussion about each pick/tune first and post the songs below! I threw in a couple extra tunes in the middle of discussion to look back at some of the bands prior work I discussed! Enjoy! šø
Starting off with the one ska band in the bunch I go with No Doubtās mega huge pop hit āDonāt Speakā. Before this third single the band was mostly limited to alternative rock radio & MTV success.

Followed by maybe the biggest song of 1998, āTime Of Your Lifeā by Green Day! The song was every schoolās graduation song for years to come along with even making the Seinfeld 1998 series finale show closing credits. Green Day got a lot of shit for having a āAcousticā pop song but it was huge for a reason, itās catchy!

Next up itās āWhatās My Age Again from Blink-182. The 1999 pop radio hit took Blink-182 from potential alternative rock one hit wonder. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sT0g16_LQaQ&pp=ygUQZGFtbWl0IGJsaW5rIDE4Mg%3D%3D (with 1997ās Dammit) to pop stardom! You must remember before the 1999 album blew up with huge mainstream success, some wondered if the band would just be a one hit wonder. The band would later release alternative post punk influenced music and return to alternative rock music but in 1999 they went full bubblegum pop sensations!

Last up besides the bonus tune is the Offspring! I gotta be honest here, I love many songs on the record but truthfully the pop crossover isnāt my favorite. Iām of course talking the 1997/1998 hit āPretty Fly (For a White Guy)ā. It was on the 1997 released album and came outta nowhere blowing up on pop radio & MTV. I personally prefer the alt rock third single āThe Kids Arenāt Alrightā https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7iNbnineUCI&pp=ygUgb2Zmc3ByaW5nIHRoZSBraWQgYXJlbid0IGFscmlnaHQ%3D
but to stay in the theme of today I gotta go with the pop crossover hit! I have to say I think outta these four tunes the Offspringās āPretty Flyā comes off to me like the most corny and least interesting song. But given the other selections it is the only thing that truly fits here in the 4th spot! Enjoy!

Alright letās get into the tunes!
