Is E-mail Marketing Dead?

A couple of days ago, I did something that I hadn't done for quite some time. I opted in for a freebie to get a free ebook regarding affiliate marketing. Whenever I do such a thing, I have this special e-mail address that I never check. It's my dump address. After opting in, I go there, get my free e-book and don't bother to read all the e-mails that I would get from this person.

I did a lot of affiliate marketing in my past and I just realized the limits of building a list. Probably everyone nowadays has several e-mail addresses and one that is just for such a purpose where we get all the spam.

The funny thing is that this ebook was supposed to teach me how affiliate marketing works. Basically you have an opt-in page that you drive traffic to, on this opt-in page you offer a freebie to encourage people to sign up to your list. Then you generate an automated e-mail series that you send to the person who signed up to little by little bring her to your paid offer and to make him buy your product.

Is e-mail marketing still valid nowadays?

Just recently I had an issue with my work e-mail. It got blocked by outlook addresses and I realized that there are some things were norm nowadays that I had no idea about. It's things called SPF, DKIM and DMARC authentication requirements. Thanks to chatgpt, I learned what I needed to know to set this up for my work e-mail.

This showed me that whatever you do regarding e-mail, you need to be up to date and the e-mail providers like gmail, outlook or yahoo will do everything possible to filter out everything that looks remotely like spam.

In my opinion, in these conditions E-mail marketing simply doesn't work anymore. The chances that your e-mails are delivered have decreased, you might get flagged for spamming quite quickly and then people use their spam addresses to sign up to your offers. This is without taking into account that only about 20% of the people who receive your e-mails actually open them and even fewer click on the link in your e-mails.

You would probably need at least 10'000 subscribers in order to get a reasonable conversion of your e-mail actions. The issue with that is that most services for e-mail marketing index their prices to the size of your list. With a big list, you pay a lot of monthly subscription. On one hand, you need a lot of subscribers to generate an income and on the other your potential profits get eaten up by the increased costs of the providers...

I honestly believe that in 2025, it's not possible to acquire new customers through e-mail marketing. E-mail is still useful for maintaining customers that already know you to communicate and give information.

The list is no longer king? But has it been replaced with community building and getting closer to your customers?

When I look at all the websites around AI coming out, I think it's the age of social logins through Google or others that directly bring you into a community space, where you make your downloads, sell stuff, chat, give courses. With these platforms, you can directly connect with your community through push notifications or even e-mails. It's much less clumsy than e-mail marketing in my opinion.

I still have a few emails, but I think you're right. It doesn't work anymore. I even think that 10,000 subscribers is too small a number for any serious business.

You need a huge and regularly updated list to make some sales and it gets quickly expensive. Mailchimp for example costs about 100 $ per month with 10'000 subscribers!

99.9% of marketing emails are reported as spam by me ... i know where to look if i want something , not waiting for others to tell me what i should buy ;) A lot of those companies that keep sending me emails will lose me as a customer.

That's another good point. People have changed their behavior when it comes to purchase stuff online. We rather try to find what we need by ourselves and most of us will compare prices and services before deciding anything. What you say is that it might even be contra productive to send newsletters and mailings to customers...

correct make sure that al you mails have a cancel option where people can easily cancel the email subsciption , that is the least you can do to keep them happy .

people these days easily leave a negative review for spammy mails ... that wil hurt you more in the end .

The answer for me is yes. I rarely check my email anymore, and I never see any real emails. It's always full of scams. It's annoying.

I hardly ever open my email app, unless I need to collect a confirmation code for what I'm signing up for. I think email marketing will be more of a niche segment of one's own marketing strategy, other forms of marketing like social media, have better distribution.

I think my email is just for a promotional bulletin from my credit cards, invoices from my bank, or my online purchases. Sometimes we just ignore or unsubscribe from marketing for new products that we subscribe to and others that we don't want to. Conclusion... yes ofc. They are sometimes tagged as "spam" and we ignore spam 😂 !LOL

The truth is that I also have a special email address for that kind of thing, precisely to prevent my main inbox from being filled with emails that I probably won't read.
I agree with you that email marketing strategies have become increasingly complicated, especially with filters and low open rates.

I don't really have one from it, but I do have separate emails for things like games. I just find it easier to separate things and I agree that emails just don't matter as much anymore.

What you're telling us is interesting...
Today, everything is undoubtedly evolving at an unstoppable pace, and this is proof of that.

My personal experience would concur with your findings. I almost only read email from known senders or known entities. Anything else will be considered phishing and scam mails.

It's been a long time since he died, now only Spam remains.
