I have a very high tolerance for alcohol, so I typically go for quality over quantity. I can either spend a lot of money getting tipsy, or I can spend the same amount on high quality liquor and really enjoy the finer spirits, so I choose the latter.
Since I have kids, I take the rare date night opportunity to go whiskey tasting. The last memorable whiskey I had was William Weller 12 Year. Sadly, it's next to impossible to get here. I'd have to take a drive to Las Vegas to possibly track down a bottle, and the time to do it just isn't in the cards until the kids are older.
My wife and I went out for lunch a few months ago and went to a new restaurant/bar called Maddy's. I decided to sample a few shots of their more expensive whiskey. Of all the ones I tasted, there was a clear winner: Crown Royal 18 Year Extra Rare. I liked it so much, I bought a bottle when I found it in the local liquor store.

It came in a very fancy box that magnetically closes. Open it up, and the bottle is in the iconic Crown Royal bag, inside a chamber lined with gold.

The bottle itself is elegant, refined, and tastefully done.

It has a great aroma that is almost cherry-like. It's smoothe with a bit of caramel, vanilla and a hint of cherry to start. As the flavor tapers off, you get a medium, oak finish and a hint of cherry. It's a very fine whiskey that isn't overly expensive, yet really sets itself apart from your entry-level whiskeys. If you have the opportunity to sample this, don't hesitate!
