Food Rescue Mission No58 - Drive through Riverview Hospital

in Ecency21 days ago

This report is for Wednesday April 1st 2026.

I didn't take many new photos, but we had very interesting detour during our adventure.

We are continuing with our food rescue mission, here in Metro Vancouver area in British Columbia, Canada.

Every week we have the same list of stores we need to visit. We have several Save on Foods stores in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody. Save on Foods is currently our sole biggest contributor. If we count all the rescue food, more than 60% of it comes from Save on Foods.

Other notable stores are Buy Low Foods (this is a new one - we started collaboration just two months ago, I think), Superstore by Loblaw, Thrifty Foods and TNT, one store each.

This time we also used smaller truck, just like last week. It's always a challenge to do optimized boxes packing inside the truck, specially with this one. Boxes are not the same sizes, some are even just open carton ones, my worst enemy, since I'm in charge for packing. If there is a lot of food during the day we have to unload the truck at the receiving center once and then visit few more stores and unload one more time.

The trip was taking us near Riverview Hospital so we decided to take a 10 minutes detour and drive through the area.

Riverview Hospital is very interesting place. Buildings are now empty and deserted. Architecture is amazing.

Hospital was build around year 1910 as first facility for mentally ill patients in British Columbia.

In 1911, British Columbia's first Provincial Botanist, John Davidson, established an arboretum, a nursery, and a botanical garden on the hospital lands, often with the assistance of patients, as there existed a belief in the therapeutic value of this kind of work. The botanical garden was moved to the new University of British Columbia in 1916, but the arboretum and nursery remained.

Maybe the most interesting part of this site is those beautiful buildings are now used in film industry.

Some of the movie filmed here are:

Watchmen, Supernatural, The X Files, Arrow, Elf, Smallville, Happy Gilmore, Prison Break, Riverdale, Falling Skies, Motherland: Fort Salem, The Butterfly Effect, Final Destination 2, and Grave Encounters have made use of the Riverview property to form sets depicting a variety of scenes.

A significant portion of Deadpool 2, including the initial and final battle sequences, was filmed at Centre Lawn.
