Tough Zwift session and a small improvement... my training diary entry from July 24 2026

in Actifit8 days ago (edited)

(This house cat came up to me yesterday as I was returning from the post office, where I had dropped off some returns for my wife.)

Hi Actifitters,

yesterday was a tough training day. In addition to close-grip push-ups, I did a few dumbbell exercises, and although I wasn't sure I’d have time for a cycling workout, I can now look back on the most grueling pedal session since my injury.

During the close-grip push-ups, I managed to increase my reps from 8 to 9 in the final set. That means I’m now just two reps away from reaching my current milestone—even though, during the second and third sets, it felt like I had less power than in my last workout.

The next goal according to the training plan (47+):

set 1set 2set 3set 4set 5break between sets
91188max (min. 11)60 seconds

My previous attempt (44):

set 1set 2set 3set 4set 5break between sets
91188860 seconds

Yesterdays attempt (45):

set 1set 2set 3set 4set 5break between sets
91188960 seconds

The cycling workout was a whole different story. Zwift is currently running a Tour de France event featuring new courses and races each week based on real routes in France. One of these courses really had me gasping for breath yesterday. I could have taken it a bit easier, but I kept getting carried away and sprinting in an attempt to beat my past records. Unfortunately, I hardly ever succeeded. It is clear, then, that I still have a lot of work ahead of me to regain the fitness level I had before my injury.

Duration - 0:36:61
Distance - 36.61 km
Elevetaion gain - 203 m
Average speed - 31.6 km/h
Maximum speed - 47.2 km/h
Average power output - 181 watts
Maximum power output - 589 watts
Average heart rate - 149 bpm
Maximum heart rate - 177 bpm

Yesterday morning, Garmin thought I should take a rest day, but I felt like training, so I ignored it. That’s probably why the cycling workout felt so strenuous. I also slipped straight back into overtraining with that session.

Mission 80 (Day 26 = 88.1 kg / Goal = 80.0 kg / Initial weight = 90.0 / Total loss = 1.9 kg)

Yesterday's workout pushed my total calorie expenditure past 3,700 kcal, allowing me to achieve a significant calorie deficit. However, I’ve lost 900 grams since yesterday, which is actually far too much; I would have understood a 200-gram drop. It seems my water balance has been thrown off again.

This evening, my wife and I are attending an anniversary celebration where we’ll almost certainly eat and drink more than is good for us. We'll see what the scale says tomorrow. ;-)

As I just mentioned, I’ve slipped into a state of overtraining. It would probably be best to take a rest day. However, since I have an invitation for this evening, I’d like to burn at least a few calories beforehand. So, I’m going to hop back on the bike and pedal at a moderate intensity.
