There might be a step in between step 3 and step 4...
I mean once followed, you scroll down the page a bit and and you see "searching for a fan". When you search there for svanbo you'll get "unfollow" or "settings". When you chose "settings", you adapt the settings and confirm.

An other reason could be that you've set your upvote mana treshold too high?...
